Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

Not really a discussion but more of a question.   When I was growing up, some of my  older relatives used to go "stream fishing"  As  I grew older, I realized what they were calling stream fishing was fly fishing.

This all came back to me when I recently acquired a coll little pen knife that has a fisherman landing a large fish while obviously fly fishing in a stream.  (pictures of knife will be posted once I take them)

The older relatives made  fly lures and fished standing in stream wearing waders. so there is no doubt they were talking about  fly fishing. So do other people call fly fishing "stream fishing" or was this just term  of my older relatives?

We call it Fly Fishing down here.

As a kid in rural southeastern PA, stream fishing was throwing a line (casting rod/reel) in the water with some split shot or lead sinker & a worm on the hook.  Fly fishing seemed to be what guys wearing Orvis stuff did - with a hat full of flys and waders as opposed to bare feet.

Now I'm inclined to think that my relatives were talking geography instead of type of fishing -- as in they were going to the stream instead of the river bank.

It is hard to explain but their was swift running shallow stream that flowed nearby that dumped into a slow moving river that was right by the house. They primarily fly fished at the stream (because of the current) and bait cast for catfish at the river bank.

My idea of stream fishing, is shorts and sneakers and walk into the stream with pole and worms. I have caught lots of fish this way.

Sorry, nothing like that around here. We have Bayous, Rivers, Lakes and Swamps. Wading in is not advised. We do fly fish, mostly for Blue Gill and Bass.
