When I used to be a competitive shooter I had a huge moth fly directly in front of me while trap shooting one night. It distracted me while I was swinging on a target I missed the target. It happened to be the 25th bird on a perfect string of hit targets costing me a perfect round. I like bugs, just not that one particular moth!

Very cool, Carl! I remember when I was quite young and visiting Disneyland my parents let me buy an Attica Atlas Moth in one of the gift shops on Main Street. It was encased in a large glass cube and posed in what was supposed to be its natural environment. It was similar to a terrarium only there was nothing still living inside. It was very cool, also! And, the Attica Atlas moth also has similar markings that look like eyes. Here is a pic of one...

Attica Atlas moths are found in Southeast Asia and in Cantonese their name translates to "Snakes Head Moth" because those eye-like outer edges bear a striking resemblance to a snakes head.  I kept that glass encased moth for nearly 3 decades. It was a beautiful adornment on dressers or a mantle.

Thanks for sparking such a good memory for me with this picture of your moth! You have some really cool critters in your neck of the woods!

Cheers, my friend!

BlackWitch Moth (ascalapha odorata) about 7 inches and it gets larger, on my back porch. Symbol of death in southwestern mythology. Note the false eyes on each wing. Moving around south Texas this time of year
