Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

This is the Avalon Bowie by Ash Blades. The Avalon features a long drop point blade with a 90 degree spine and a Spanish notch, a mixed medium handle consisting of Black Walnut with horn and brass spacers, and a brass guard and pommel cap. Custom file work adorns the brass guard.

One of my largest Bowies in the collection, it is extremely well balanced, lightweight for its size, and wonderfully crafted. A real tell of craftsmanship is the transition between handle material and spacers - can you feel the transition or is it seamless? I am very pleased to say this one is absolutely seamless!

Thanks for your comments guys. I'll be honest with this one...it has some heft to it. When you hold it, you just want to say "bring it!".  :-)

Post Script: I have it on good authority from Mark Zalesky that the little doohickey at the choil has come to be called a "Spanish notch" by collectors and is traditional to antique Bowie knives, mostly of the 1830's and early 1840's, and also one of its ancestors the Mediterranean dirk.

Mark goes on to tell me that functionally speaking, it is believed to be more for decoration or appearances than anything else, although the notch on mine looks like it could be used to open a bottle of beer!
