I bought my Flexcut quite a few years ago and these things cost quite a bit even then, there is one place in the UK selling the carving jack that I have for the equivalent of $200. I really feel that it is a lot of money to pay for such an uncomfortable knife. It works okay but I could never love it and if it didn't cost so much I would likely have given it away by now. I am really surprised that there seems to have been no development to improve the model that I have, I guess they must just sell well as it is. It would be interesting to know if anybody actually likes the thing.

If anyone wanted to swap it for a Ross Oar carver ..........

Flexcut makes 6 different knives in the carvin' jack series (7 if you consider the right and left handed versions of the Carvin' Jack).

Jeremy, the red one is called the Spoon Carvin' Jack.  Not cheap, msrp is near $125.00.

It does not look very comfortable at all but it is also not the one I expected to see.  I have seen the fixed but have not seen much of this one at all

I didn't know Flexcut made folding knives. I have a Flexcut carving knife that I generally use for carving spoons. It is an interesting looking knife, but I can see why you are having a hard time with it.

Hi DLKG ergonomically the knife is really poor but then I paid for it so am giving it some use.

The wood is a burl from an Italian Alder , there are loads of them around here and they sometimes have quite large burls on. The trouble is that you don't know what they are like inside until you cut into them. This one had loads of cracks and bits of bark. I don't set out to carve anything just start cutting away and see what happens. This seems to be two mushrooms which have an oak leaf attached around the back. Most of the things I carve just turn out to be a pile of chips, but this one may make it to something.

John, it's nice to hear someone else say the thing I've been feeling for a couple years.  The blades are plenty sharp, but the ergonomics are far from ideal.  The worst thing though is that it seems like I'm going to open up my hand every time I open one of the gouges.  Flexcut makes some great fixed blades, but they've got some work to do on their folders, or at least this folder...

On another note, what are you carving?
