I've been looking for one of these Gerber BG paracord knives for a while now. Finally found one at a price that I could justify.
Very happy with this find but I'm definitely gonna change out the paracord for black.

Paracord wrapping?

Probably the reason that I was drawn to it on the first place, Kevin.  I already have the ka-bar set of skeleton knives that I've wrapped with Paracord.

Why did GERBER do this, I don't know.  But I'd say it was probably to maximize the BG connection.  I haven't removed the paracord, yet, but I'm guessing, from experience, that there's less than 4 feet of cord there.  Not much when it comes to the cord itself.  It does give it a nice slim profile.  If you've seen some of my other wraps you'll notice that I've sealed the handles with super glue or some of my wife's fingernail polish,  to make it a permanent part of the knife.

Granted, G-10 or micarta would have also been fairly lightweight and could be shaped into an extremely comfortable handle.

On a side note, I found that the sheath came mismatched.  Both sides have the same blade shape which I find odd.  Doesn't seem to affect the blade retention though, just odd.  It's not like I'm planning on going to the outback or anything and would be scared for it to drop out or something.  Now, after I'm gone no telling what the girls will do with it.

Ahh!  smaller profile then?  ok, I can accept that.

Being as I have carried a knife every day for the last 45 years, I take it for granted that I have at least one knife on me at all times.  If I don't have a knife on me, I am not dressed yet.  LOL!

Of course getting into a concert or on an airplane is a little more difficult.  As my wife is fond of saying, getting me to shed my knives is like disarming Germany!  LOL!

Good score there, JJ!  Nice tracking this down...

And Kevin, my thinking is that paracord makes for a much more compact (& also concealable) knife, which might make it more likely you'd pack the knife, & have it with you should the situation require.

Of course, with my luck, I would end up having the knife on me in a time of need, but completely forget that I had it for the majority (or all) of the time period in which it would be useful.  For what it's worth, I don't think this has actually happened to me with knives, but it's definitely happened with other items (headphones, chargers, etc.) -- & of course, I'm a knife guy, I tend to know what knife or knives I have on me at any given time (other people may not be knife people, & not remember that they have this little fixed blade on them).

Sorry, I'm just getting into the question of the usefulness of paracord wraps on knife handles -- it's good to think about these things sometimes, & it's really been a while since I've thought about Paracord as a handle material...  Thanks for bringing it up, Kevin D!

okay...

It seems everybody is in on it except me.

I do not understand why there are so many knives being offered with paracord in the handle.  I just dont get it.

I understand that it is cheaper than any real handle material, and can make for a passable handle.  But to me that just screams that it is a blade that the company did not want to invest anything into the handle materials and make a 'good' knife.

I did hear something about 'If you find yourself in a 'survival' situation, you can use the cord...'   My thinking reply...  How many feet of cord is on that handle?  I doubt a whole lot.  and are you ever in a situation that turn into a 'survival' situation?

I am not trying to disparage the knife or anything, I am just ignorant of the 'Why'...
