James, I'm not sure that the piece has any particular purpose besides being ornamental? It is a genuine Native American artifact that I have owned for many years. It is an antler with the bead work that you see, and it also had some fur on it when I first got it over 30 years ago. In the picture that I am adding below you can see a tribal marking that was made by the artist who created the piece. I especially like it because it is so interesting and colorful. You'll notice I pose most of my knives along side of it. See the pic below for the marking I mentioned...

I'm sure that this mark means something? Unfortunately I can't remember what it is, though. Years ago when people would ask about it and what it is I would tell them that it was used by a very primitive tribe to deflower their virgins. *Yikes!*
