Steve- Glad I could steer you in the right direction on that beautiful and rare old Scagel-- Happy that Bernard was helpful to you. Just curious, for my own benefit, and I am sure others, in what price range did Mr. Levine evaluate your knife??-I certainly don't want to interfere with any possible impending sales, but would love an answer if & when you feel comfortable doing so.

Thank you John McCain for the info on Bernard Levine! He's been very helpful to my girlfriend regarding the knife and has confirmed it IS in fact a real Scagel from the 1920's and is sending her a Certificate of Authenticty  He's even going to contact a few collectors that  buy early Scagel's to see about a possible sale.  I personally find the knife gorgeous and would like her to keep it. I can't believe the craftsmanship put in to a knife that old..Amazing.

Very nice knife Steve. That is also great advice from John. I hope we get to hear what you find out.

Thank you Charles. It really is a nice piece. My girlfriend has kept it in her safe for about 10yrs and just recently asked me if I thought it was worth something

Wow, what a find!

Thank you John for the helpful info. I am definitely going to get A Certificate of Authenticity. We have confirmed that the knife was my girlfriends great grandfathers and was believed bought from Abercombie and Finch in the 1920's. After her grandfathers passing the family inherited the property and the knife was found in a barn by her son. We have had a few collectors/dealers wanting the knife but she will not sell until she knows an accurate value. Thank you so much for taking time to respond to my post!

Steve, I don't often do this, as I ID and value a ton of knives here. You were very likely wise to refuse a $5000 offer. Some of these early Scagels can go for $25,000  to $40,000 bucks. I don't know your provenance or documentation on this knife, & I am uncomfortable giving you a value. Not saying yours is by any means, but when you get into these kind of dollars, counterfeits are a often a concern from potential buyers. My advice is to have it appraised by Bernard Levine here at his website for $25- A certificate of Authenticity  and a value by him would pretty much put to rest any question of value. He is generally considered the top authority in the field. Here is the email link-http://knife-expert.com/appr-k.htm
