Tom, for carbon steel I do my own heat treat. I also started doing it for stainless but the oven I bought for it (secondhand) turned out to be a piece of crap so I junked it.

I'm still looking for another oven at a fair price. But for now I have my heat treat done by a german knifemaker (not too far from here).

It's not cheap. But he knows what he's doing and for some steels he also does a cryo treatment if I request it.

Alexander,

Do you do your own heat treat? I have 8-12 knives that are just about ready for heat treat but I haven't decided how far to take the sanding and grinding before sending off for HT since it's my first time making my own blade blanks. I am trying to get to 20 knives to maximize my savings but I live in Florida where it is HOT! I work in my garage every weekend and it's 95 with a heat index of 100-102 F. So I have been being a wimp and finishing old projects (gluing handles, making handles and making sheaths) that I can work on inside when I can. Your work inspires me to get back out there and finish my 20 blanks! I appreciate that!

Can we see it when it is done?

It shouldnt distort. I've had pretty good results with 52100 with a fairly thin edge.
