OSHA would have a field day writing up the safety violations in a work environment like that today. And, yeah! The noise level in there had to be extreme.

I wonder how many of those guys got ground up in those jack shafts and flat belts, with the loose clothing they wore.  Not to mention the noise.  My God, the noise!
