The online community of knife collectors, A Knife Family Forged in Steel
With all the time, effort and expense are you satisfied with your collection? Did you buy the right kind of knives, over the years? What would you change, if you could, in your collecting habits?
These are some questions I think, we all ask ourselves, in private. I know some have large collections, some have small and some have everything in between. No matter the size or the value, are you happy with that collection? I know we have all bought a knife here or there, that was a mistake. I know I have.
The only one a knife has to please is the owner, so I ask, " Are you happy with that collection?"

I'm pretty happy with my collection and the way it's going. Just wish I didn't like high end customs so much.....I'm hoping to buy another one this year....
My custom knife collection is nearing what I'd like it to be:
1 High end fixed blade hunter
1 High end slipjoint
1 High end tactical folder (hopefully this year)
1 High end bowie (sometimes in the future)
Other than that I collect A.G. Russell Texas Ranger knives (1 more to go and I think I'll have the whole set...unless he brings out another one this year)
And the occasional A.G. Russell regular production/ Hen and Rooster vintage.
I am in the boat with BOB R. My wife asks HOW MANY KNIVES of the same type do you need. You don't use any of them? What are we going to do with them when you Die?
Today I am Happy with the knives I have kept from my overall years of Collecting. I have over the years changed direction in collecting and sold, given away knives at less than I paid. Those were my earlier mistakes. I learned it is hard to buy used knives and resell them for any profit to return to my collecting addiction so I quit. Except for a few Older Case XX knives that I could not afford to buy in Mint condition, most New Knives I own are from the 60's and newer in Stag and Bone. I have tried to be knowledgeable in my latter years of Collecting. I feel like I have made some good Buys and not a lot of mistakes lately. I have very few in Celluloid, they are pretty, but the possibility of them giving off that nasty Gas scares me to death. I have expanded my Collecting Horizon's from Only Case xx Cutlery, to Other Brands, Mfg. & Tang Stamps. I doubt I will ever complete My collection, Time, Money, and Life Expectancy are not on my side. I collect what I like and I always advise people to do the same..
I have no rhyme or reason to my collection which is not too large, (my wife has said otherwise) but I like most of them. I mainly collect folders but have quite a few fixed blades too. Just purchased a couple of hand forged fixed blades and was so impressed I ordered two more, one of those will be for my son's birthday. None are of the same pattern though. Even the knives I am not so fond of am still not willing to get rid of. I buy some of my knives to use, especially the ones that had been used, but I do have those I will not use. Overall I guess I am mostly satisfied with my collection, but always on the hunt. Good discussion Robert.
Howard, I hear you brother. I am in that same boat. I think I have 16 Fixed blades now. Love them all.
As others have said, I'm happy with the "collection" side of my knives. It is the fixed blade users that are a problem. I am getting a collection of them, now. I started out knowing that I would buy knives in various steels, to find what I liked best. It is a bigger investment than the folder collection knives, but useful because I am on a mission - hahaha. The problem is that just as I think I have bought my last fixed blade, I see something else I think I should try.
Sounds great, Miss Sue. How long before they open up the vault?
I like my collection of mini cokes and mini knives...just wish I had bought more years ago....
Now I am just waiting on the mini coke to come out of the Case Vault....Hurry up W.R.Case& Sons....
Sue
Sell off a few every now and then, that will help keep the numbers down.....lol
Ricky, thats a good question - can we get to many to enjoy?
I am happy, but I am finding that no matter how many knives I buy, I always want more. I then have to ask myself how many is too much to keep up with and enjoy ?
