The online community of knife collectors, A Knife Family Forged in Steel
I've been spending quite a bit of time on here and I noticed a lot of people have a direction to there collection.
My collection is all shapes and sizes. So I got to thinking what kind of knife to I want to collect. Just one brand or one style or maybe just one color or type of handle.
But first I need to sell off all the knives that I don't want. So I took a long hard look at my collection. For one reason or another I like all my knives. Once there in the case there mine. Not for sale. Once in a while I'll trade one for another or sell one to buy another better looking one. For the most part though I keep them and look at them pull them out and dust them and put a light coat of oil on the blades and a drop on the hinge. Once in a while I start thinking abut dropping one in my pocket. Usually I end up going out and buying another one just for that purpose. Taking one out and scratching it up and messing up that fine factory edge is just to hard to think about.
So I guess I'll just keep adding anything that catches my eye and adding to my collection. No rhyme or reason except that I love knives all knives from old rusty wooden handles to new bright and shiny ones. the main thing is I collect what I like.
I think most people just might feel just like I do about there collection.

Lee, best thing I can tell you, is no matter what you collect something else is going to catch your eye. Sure you might give them away like I did for 50 years, stop collecting, but something else will come along and you will start all over. Its in our blood. there is nothing better, or no better feeling than owning something that everyone else would like to have. Oh what an awsome feeling. I have some fine and beautful Great Easterns, but then I see something Jan or Steve has, and think man I would love to have that. There is no cure for this diease..... So collect them all,LOL
The only Direction I have is with The NAHC Knives and id like to eventually have one of all they have produced, in all reality they are not a "REAL" collectors knife, made in China and some times not often though a bit cheesy, at the same time here a few made by CRKT and Case. The point is that I like them, I love the club even though its a bit of a gaff, and have been a life member since 93. All the rest are what catches my eye like You said, From Mtec to rough rider, Sog to Buck, Ontario to Puma I dont care . If I like it I get it. There is a dealer at my local Flea on Sundays who has been very good to me and me to him, He has a huge inventory for a flea vendor and hooks me up all the time, and I make it a point to spend at least upwards of 500 a year give or take , whats nice is he knows my taste and will put things aside he thinks i might like, this sunday was a very cool looking MTEC ,not my usual purchase from him but he knew this one would make me Oooo and Ahhh, He took 10 off the price and its here with me now. Sometimes its a Buck or a Sog etc etc.. My point is like Yours I enjoy it all, I look forward to my visits with him purchase or not. Its all part of a great Hobby and Community. And Here We Are!
Lee, I had to double check your post. For a minute there I thought that I wrote it. Heck! I could have written it because it describes me to a tee. There is no rhyme or reason to what I collect. Well, that's not exactly true. I, too, collect what I like. So I guess that's rhyme and reason enough, right?
I've always had a direction, a plan, and a theme. I'd get tired of my plan, direction and theme, because there was so much that I liked. After a year or two or three I'd change my collection. Now I collect whatever strikes my fancy......and I've been happier. I never have to say "I can't buy that, it doesn't fit into my collection!" Though I do have to say I'm kinda going in a certain direction for the moment.
Lee, While my collection consists mostly of whittlers, I've got plenty of other patterns. If I like the looks of it, I'll buy it.
I started long time ago buying anything and everything I liked then I got a little burned out and started giving them to friends thinking I was going to quit collecting. Then someone told me I needed to have a Pattern so I would have a purpose to my collection, so I did that for 5 years or so then said I like too many different styles and patterns. Now I have a whole lot of some and quite a few of a mix and LIKE them All!
Even bought some that I thought would make nice round table knives but can't seem to use them for that I buy a new one to give! cause I can't seem to part with it! I think I may be a hoarder!
Lee,
You are so right. Although there is a focus to most of our collection, it is pretty eclectic LOL. We collected only Case for many years. Then we started with the Great Eastern, then Donnie decided to make some, then some customs and a few tacticals. Along the way came some global brands.
One of the hardest thing I have ever done in our collection was trade the celluloids for bones. It was like saying goodbye to old friends LOL. I dont know if we have ever sold a knife out of our collection
Steve great minds think alike. lol
