Knife makers of the Dutch Knife Exhibition part 5

Now as everyone knows sometimes people come from far for these knifeshows.

The dealer who's next did come from as far away as South Africa.

Here's some of the things they brought with them

André van Heerder knives. I loved this one because of the pattern that snakes between the carbon fibre scales and the lovely damascus

And some knives that they'd produced themselves

And as a finishing touch this lovely carbing set in Damascus and Giraffe bone.

The next maker is someone who I'd met the previous year. This was his first time at the show. He calls his knives

And only works with recycled steels. Everything on his table

Is in it's second life.

Another firsttimer on a knifeshow was Vico van Duyn. He's only been making knives a short time. But he's VERY excited about his hobby and makes some different looking blades (in a good way).

He has a friend who's a blacksmith and makes his own damascus. Every now and then one of the bigger blades doesn't pass the inspection process and Vico gets to use the scraps which he does very nicely

Someone with a completely different outlook on making knives is the knifemaker that calls himself:

The most intimidating piece he had on his table was this one. Just look at the stock thickness!!!

I think that's close to half an inch thick!!! It didn't work out completely the first time. You can see a crack running through the handle. He told me this was because of the internal stresses of quenching a blade this thick. He showed me a second one that they'd hardened to 58rc in stead of 60rc (Both blades are in D2 steel) and because of the lower hardness that one didn't crack.

A sidevieuw looks like this

And he also does a version that's slightly less thick (maybe 1/3 of an inch instead of half an inch) (the top one)

And the knife was surprisingly comfortable in the hand:

Last one today is someone who wasn't at his table when I was there. But I believe it's another French

maker. And he makes some very nice slipjoint folders

Tomorrow some more Dutch makers as well as my favourite scandinavian maker.

Thanks Alex, for bringing this show to life for us. We would have never gotten to know or see anything about it. You're sort of our European Knife Reporter. Ha.Ha Great stuff, keep it coming.
