I think Case's quality did indeed take a dip in the late 1980's and into the early 2000's.  This was a time when a lot of knife companies ran tough economic times.  It seems to me that their quality has been improving in recent years and I think a good chunk of that is due to competition  from off shore and domestically.   Other facts include a boom in the number of Knife Collectors.
