An interesting tidbit is that when the SAS and LRDG (two British Special Operations Forces from WWII) started carrying the M1 Carbine they were issued the M3 trench knife  along with the "Winchester Carbines." They preferred this knife over the more famous Fairbairn–Sykes fighting knife (Commando Dagger).  They felt the blade was more robust and the leather grip was larger and less likely to slip. In the meantime American Paratroopers and Rangers in Northwest Europe were trying to get their hands on the Commando Dagger!  Today, the closest relative to the M3 still in active service (other than the M16 Bayonet) is  Poland's  Wz 92 Air Assault Knife.  A later version, the Wz 98 has a saw blade added to the top edge of the blade.
