It is really handy if you're using a machete clearing a trail because you're not always swinging away at brush but you don't want to keep taking the machete in and out of the sheath every few minutes and you really don't want to have it dangling from your wrist hanging loose.  This way you can loosen your grip and wiggle your fingers every once in a while but when it is time to hack away along the trail, you just tighten up your grip and swing away.  It gives your hand and in your arm muscles a chance to relax  but you can keep your machete at the ready.
