Yes, they really are rams horn and buffalo horn (usually water buffalo). They work well for handles although thin slabs can warp and need to be pinned down well. Here is a rams horn knife I just finished for an order.

Thanks, I am really happy with this knife. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, but soon after that I have some jobs for it in the woods.

Schrade  Pro Hunter and Schrapfinger with Ram's Horn by Herman Williams...He started using ram's horn since Sambar Stag has gotten so expensive.
