Fixed blades

A dicsussion group about knives of the Great Outdoors needs to have an area to discuss all those fixed blades. This will be a place to show off your fixed blades. Doesn't matter if it for filet fish or just the knife you use around the camp fire. Maybe its your favorite deer skinner! Let's see it!

For years, the knife i took camping was my Camillus Mk2 Fighting knife. But it is now in retirement. Not because I found something better, just because it has too much sentimental meaning to have it confiscated by a park ranger or game warden or lost through stupidity.

My current camp knife is a Rough Rider 844 Burl Wood Hunter. Why? Because it has been getting the job done. I've got Hunters by Bear & Son, Case and Buck that all cost more but this one seems to get the job done better and cost half as much as the others.

The only issue I had with the knife was the strap for the sheath. It got in the way of taking the knife in and out of the sheath . A little altering and all was fine.

I'm wondering if this knife could be useful for anything in the bush? Any thoughts. This is probably my smallest fixed blade. 1.5 inch blade (3.8 CM) 4 inches (10 CM overall), a Rough Rider (Stoneworx) mini neck knife.

It is a ready-made choke-up knife, wherever you need to get close. Trim some fat from the edge of a steak, or cut a big steak into portions before cooking, and your big knife is dirty from batoning wood or hacking a sapling for the cross-member of a spit. Rock it back and forth to cut paracord, or any string, to length. It is easily palmed in your left hand in case you don't know the intentions of a person entering your camp, leaving your right hand free to shake hands.

sheath has staples between rivets,is that original or someone aded it?

usually i'm carrying one of my puukos,3.5" or 4" blades

Nice Ken! How large is that blade. It looks similar to the Rough Rider Hunter's Buddy. (7 3/8 over all with a 3 1/2 inch blade)

Tobias, It is 11" overall with a 6 1/2" blade - I agree it does look like the Hunters buddy.

I'd stick with the Buffalo Bob Skinner. The Hunter's buddy is too small for the hand. That's a right purty knife you got there. But I'm glad my name isn't Buffalo Bob. I'd hate to be skinned!

Another inexpensive knife I recently picked up is the Fox N Hound 621 "medium" clip point. It has a nice blade ergonomics with a good thumb/finger rest on top of the spine to allow firm downward pressure as well as some nice gimping near the tang and a good finger groove in the ricasso. It lacks a guard but the stag and wood handle does offer a positive grip and the the 3 inch (7.6 cm) cutting edge is well forward. At 8.25 inches (20.5 cm) you can be the judge if it is a small or medium clip point. I'm thinking it would make a nice "first" knife for a person hunting small and medium size game. The blade is to wide for a small bird and trout knife. SMKW doesn't list the steel on their site but I have heard that it is 440A. It is made in Pakistan so that may also figure into your purchase. I bought this one because I was very impressed with its smaller brother, the Fox N Hound 620 Fixed Blade Ulu. I doubt I will buy the other knives in this family, but so far I am impressed with these two, at least when the price point is considered. The other two in the series are a skinner with and even shorter blade and hunter with a five inch cutting edge.
