Of course this means you can't always trust the Brand name despite what many of us (me included) tend to preach.

I apologize for hijacking the thread. Hopefully we can get back to under-priced brands.  I think that compared to many other made in China brands, Rough Riders are a good buy.  I'm not sure if that translates to unde rpriced or that other made in China knives are just over priced!

Thanks Tobias, my intent was to discuss knife prices in general, over or under. You take a Rough Rider, compared to brand X, it is just as well made but cost less. Is it under priced or is brand X over priced? That seems to be the meat of this discussion.

  Colt brand is another fine example. It is nicely made and while a little more costly than a Rough Rider, it is still very affordable. The question is once again. Is it under priced?

I agree with what you're saying. Knives today are definitely not under priced.

When I mentioned Gerber earlier in the thread, I meant the brand was under priced in terms of collectability, not current produced knives. Just wanted to clarify.

Kissing Crane/Robert Klass is another company produced in the PRC. I believe Kennasaw owns the brand. I was carrying one of their sodbusters until it fell apart. Definitely wasn't a "work horse" knife like we tend to think sodbusters are.

Puma is another product produced in the PRC. There are actually two Puma companies now. The one called PumaUSA, or something like that, is Chinese made. Don't know how good they are though. I have some Pumas I used as EDCs (bought about ten years ago) and they're pretty decent but I'm sure they were made in Germany. The same models are now made in China.

You know what I think is an under priced knife (maybe?) - Condor Knife & Tool out of Guatemala. I've got two fixed blades and they're fantastic. I understand that it was set up by German cutlers decades ago.

Everybody has mixed opinions on Gerber- Bought this little 2.5 " Stag Lockback a few weeks ago for $24.99-Good looking knife with nice stag and fit and finish- Hard  snap, zero blade wobble, and perfect blade alignment- Sure, it is made in China, but Gerber USA still offers a lifetime warranty- I have not tried to cut down any trees with it, but have used it as an EDC the past few weeks with no complaints for general use- Also looks good enough for your Sunday go to meeting clothes-BTW, this is my one and only Gerber ,and so far, I have no  issues with it- LOL Just saying ~~~

I've got a Gerber EZ-out and a Gerber Gator LB and both are outstanding USA made knives.  I also had a Gerber Crevice that I really liked but gave it to a friend.  He also loved it but ended up losing it on a camping trip after it got passed around one night because the back of it was a cap lifter.   The very next Monday he was out buying a replacement on eBay.

I know I posted some negatives about Gerber earlier  but after using and owning several others many years later,  I admit they make some pretty good knives.  But my first impression soured me on the brand for many years!

Obviously none of these Gerbers were designed with the collector in mind which probably explains their lower price!  But all are really good folders that will serve you well for many years.  The Gator and the EZ out both spent some time in Iraq.

Robert, Condor knives are really great knives, especially for the price point. I have about 4 of them.

I'll throw in a vote for Kershaw as well. Very well priced knives and well built. As I have no problem with "foreign made" knives...( heck...USA made is foreign for me...lol ) I find the Kershaw line an excellent bargain. I plan to buy many more...both low and high end. Two thumbs up!
