For me, it started the moment I was handed by first BSA pocketknife, as a cub scout. When the knife my dad used became mine, I was hooked. Never looked back.

CVP That is outstanding. I have long wondered how many started as Cub Scouts. They sure made a lot of knives, every boys dream.

Dad gave me a tree brand congress, as a teen, which I lost on a rabbit hunt a few years later, in a swamp. It took over a decade of searching yard sales,flea markets and gun shows to find another. During that time I purchased Case Tested and bottom X knives at the advice of Jim Parker. Collectors were chasing the old red bone and stag Case back then.

When have collectors not chased Red Bone and Stag? I'm Still not crazy about red jigged bone. I must have no concept of what it takes to be a serious knife collector.

Now the pattern seems the preferred choice, with handle choice second. When the red bone and old stag dried up in the 70's, Bulldog and Fighting Rooster entered the market to meet demand!

My goodness yes, an old congress had to be a treat for sure! Ah the days of Jim Parker, who can forget!

Tobias with over 500 knives I would say you are a pretty good collector even if nary a red bone!

Sometimes thats just what it is. And with as many shows as you and Donnie get to go to, I bet you do see a fair amount of them.

To be fair I've got quite a bit of Red Jigged Bone. Perhaps as many as ten of my knives have red jigged bone handles! And I've also got about the same number of standard trappers!

When it comes to old knives from well known companies that are good condition at a fair price -- pattern and bone color go out the window! You should buy it if you can. Admire it, enjoy it for a while and it doesn't fit your tastes or your collection then pass it on to a friend who will appreciate it!
