I couldn't agree with you more...that is a very valid point. My Remington isn't as fast as a 10/22 but I know I'm going to hit my mark. I have a 10/22 that is darn accurate..there is just something about the bolt action that makes me slow down and pay attention.

Remington 870 with sighted 20" barrel and 7 shot magazine.  Slugs, 00Buck and #8 bird shot.  Self defense and game get-er of any size from chipmunks to Grizzly. Yes ammo is heavy and this model of shotgun is bigger.  If I am in the survival mode I am not on the offensive but on the move away from metro area.

AR-15 pistol, 8.5" barrel, 10 30 round magazines full of .223, all in one nice compact carry case. 

The .223 round, from a 8.5" barrel, packs 700ftbs of force, the same as an average .44 magnum from a 6.5" barrel.

The AR-15 is proven reliable, and in the suggested situation, you will have to use your firearm to get more ammo, food, etc. .223 and 5.56 are readily available, and you can take any game that walks with that kind of firepower. 

Shotguns lose effectiveness at distance, and you aren't going to be fighting ducks and elk, you will be facing hostile humans who are competing for food and supplies. 

If the scenario were "I had to leave the house immediately and then go hunting and camping for a few weeks/months", then my answer would be different.

Thanks Randy - and if I were dropped into an extended wilderness survival situation, I would want my Marlin 60 and a thousand rounds of .22lr - where bullets = dinner in a more direct fashion!

You know Andy, my 10/22 and a thousand rounds of ammo and my extended capacity magazines wouldn't be a bad choice either.

I know this scenario is what if you could only take one gun.  But I can not envision any scenario where I would actually only take one gun.  I even take two guns when I go to Walmart!  My 10/22 would be a good choice but if I took it I would undoubtedly take my S&W Model 317 Airlite revolver.  It is a very light weight eight shot three inch barrel with adjustable sights.  It uses the same .22 LR ammo as the 10/22.

It depends on the animals that you need to survive on and the geological formation of the land.

I live on the bald prairie and 300, 400 yard shots are quite common so no piddly .22 LR (5.6x15mmR)would suffice but I don't have major predators so anything below .30 cal would suffice--lighter recoil, sound signature and ammo...I prefer my .257 Weatherby, .257 Roberts or .260 Rem.

My one gun would be a drilling, 2x16 bore over a 9.3x74mmR with an insert for .22 LR (5.5mm) in the right shotgun barrel or another in 2x16 over a 7x65Rmm Brenneke or a 2x16 over a .303 British (7.7x56mmR) also have a 2x.30 WCF (.30/30 Win/7.62×51mmR) over a 16 bore barrel.
