In the photo of "interesting knives,"  The top two knives are rope knives.  The middle two are "budding" knives.  The large one at the bottom can be called a sailor's knife.  It has a rope type blade and a marlin spike for working knots.

I have seen/held examples of the top two and the bottom one.  And yes!  I love 'em.  I am particularly intrigued with the marlin spike.  I have done a bit of research on methods of splicing rope.  Using one certainly makes that task easier!

I am 84, Kevin.  I grew up at a time when we needed to do nearly everything because most stuff couldn't be bought in stores.  Maybe it was because we weren't very well off, financially.  What we didn't know how to do, we found someone who did and learned from them.  That was how I learned to splice rope.  I didn't have a marlin spike, so I used a large nail that I ground down to the right shape on a sidewalk slab.
