Dont know if that would work but it sure sounds smart to me

I have a question I am hoping you all can help with.  I know working with buffalo horn, if it warps I can steam it and flatten it.  Does anyone know if I can do the same thing with Ram or sheep horn?  Thanks for the help

Yes, you can steam any anther or horn material, even deer horn. You might have to start with thin pieces. I've flattened ram horn that I cut from the round by boiling it for 5 minutes (or more) and then using two 1X6's and some C clamps and clamping the horn between the boards and letting cool completely.

Here's a tutorial that might help you:

http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/knife_forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&...

If you read past the tutorial, there's more helpful information.  Also, the forum members mention a "pin spinning tool" they use to finish the pins on the handle scales.  Personally, I don't have one of these tools, but recommend that you get one if you can.  Good luck!

guys i am glad you started this fourm i don't know if i can be helped here if not please send me in the right direction.sence i started here i wanted to make my own knifes.i went and got a belt sander and couple other things i thought i might need.don't know a lot right now.but i thought i would order some blanks to start i s that the way to go?alsoi ordered some scales from someone on here/can i get some advise what else i need and were to get the blank blades?thanks guys hope someone here can help...

Stephen,

Donnie started with blanks and some donated antlers.  First he did a few full tangs just to get the feel of the fit and finish process, which appears to be easier with those.  A friend in Montana wanted a hunting knife for her son for chistmas.  I brought home a suitcase full of racks, and he went to work.  Those first knives all live some where else.  Terry got hers in Montana, there is one in MN, AZ, MI and a few scattered around Tampa here.  To keep the price down while just "messing around" trying to decide if he was going to enjoy this he worked under the...you bring the stag..I'll build the knife.  There is a dealer here in FL that sells reasonable blanks called 888knives.  Not the gretest quality so we only purchsed once.  They werer OK but he reshaped the blades to better suit what he was doing.  We have also purchased from a gentleman on ebay Premium knives.  Much better quality, a little higher cosr but worth it.  I have not picked up any blanks from James Ivy as of yet (plan to do so at the blade show).  I have purchased some wonderful scales from him.  on the folding knives I have been buying again for 888, they carry some David Yellowhorse out casts that are unhadled.  The take alot of finish work because they come with scraches but they make good knives. He says to tell you to have a good dremmel tool set.  The drill press and band saw have also come in handy.  At Christmas I bought him a book called step by step knivemaking by David Boye.  I am thinking as the weather begins to settle down in the fall we will see the addition of fashioning his own blade. I can tell you the worshop grows quickly.  Feel free to ask any questions.  Some of his early works are on my page

jan i cant tell you how much that advice means to me.thank you very much. i bought some scales from james i hav'ent received them yet but he says they are nice he is a good guy very helpful like you.i will talk to him about blanks and try to contact premium knives to see if i can get a good deal.i am pretty good with my hands so i hope this works.i need to look into getting some stag.i need to keep cost down right now the tools add up.thank you very much jan you are always so much help.p.s.i i need a drill press .well it will be worth it...

not only is iKC a good source for info, but YouTube has some great videos that you can watch. there are a few that i wouldnt recomend, but for the most part, there is some good info out there.

as far as tools, i started with a 1x30 belt sander and some files. you dont need fancy eqiupment to get started. you can find blanks on Ebay and some other internet sites like knifekits.com. they are pretty fair in price too. there are some makers that will make you blanks as well and that might be an option for you.

i get most of my supplies from Jantz Supply at knifemaking.com. they have a hugh selection and good prices.

try to find someone local that is willing to help you out. you can join a knife forum to get some good info, and possibly find someone local.

keep us updated and if i can help further let me know.
