Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

Hundreds of thousands of knives being produced every year, both factory produced and custom made. In fact the number just might be staggering, if we knew it exactly.

So the questions is this: Is there a home for every single knife made, every year?

Hard to say Hog,

I know dealers that hold upwards of 1000 at a time in inventory.  Finding each of them a home is always a challange but they seem to accomplish it

Thanks Jan, it may be that eventually they all find a home but I'm interested to hear if its really true.

Well I would certainly allow them all to come live at my house Hog!  Dont think Donnie would object

I agree, I would take them all too.

My feeling is knives are produced without anything other than perhaps a "feel" for what the market will bear.. The knives are produced, "hawked' or at least a try at selling via web or catalog or dealers or TV or whatever. Anything left gets discounted ....deeply. And the cycle starts all over again!

hog i do think there is a buyer for all knives out because every one has a differnt. taste i have bought knives that i most likely would have not bought. but there is a little thing called the internet witch brings knives in to your home that most likely you would had never seen .so yes like they say there is a mate for every person i also beleave there is a knife for every person....i think if we took a poll of how many knives just the ikc members owned people would be floored at how many we have...and thats just members here...
Are you including the Frost knives in the question?  I personally think that some of what they prodice is terrible, like those $199.95 "Custom" bowies that they sell, in sets for 99 cents.
JJ There is probably always someone who is getting started and doesn't know better. I know where you can get some Frost knives real cheap.  I still have some left from 4 years ago that are in a box somewhere. I gave away some of their knives and some of those dollar tacticals didn't make it thru the day. You really have to watch what you buy there.

@ Steve .. I believe there’s actually some thought processes occurring before production runs. Given the deplorable results we’ve all seen marketed, it is hard to believe, but I’m convinced there is some thought expended prior to obtaining raw materials .. or the money for the raw materials .. or ……

JJ’s already mentioned  the unmentionable. FROST CUTLERY. Absolute pieces of sht !!! I own at least a couple a dozen of ‘em !!! That fake mini copperlock makes a nice prototyping platform before I modify a real CASE copperlock. The lockback whittler he (Jim Frost) markets is a fav of mine for gifts to the nephews .. I prefer the safety of the locking blade. One of the problems with them is I have to order (on average)  3 of them to insure I get 1 that doesn’t have some issue .. faulty lock/lazy blade/funky scale/etc. THEN.. the freebie that he throws in with the mail order. Talk about a cheap POS .. birdseye rivets .. low low quality components  throughout .. it was SOOOO BAD it was dangerous.

But,  FROST CUTLERY is a profitable business.

BECAUSE .. thought processes are expended first .. plans are made .. AND .. the SHT sells !!!

Yuppers Stephan .. I too have some of the worst examples of  ??cutlery?? that one could imagine. And like Billy points out .. even those POS found a home.

Yes, there’s a home for every one ‘em .. I’d take em if there cheap enough. And as long as they continue to sell .. somebody, right @ this moment, is ordering the raw materials required to make yet another production run of em !!!

True you are.

Some of them can be fair knives (steel warriors and all of their variants),  yep I've got some too.  Got a few of their 1400 series whittlers, with the "German stainless steel", that actually sharpen up real nice.  But like Dale said, you need to check them out before you buy one.  QC is not high on the priority list.

What gets me is the sets that average out to $1.00 (or less) per knife.   I've seen too many folks get suckered in and buy one of the sets, to re-sell, only to find out the crap that they bought.  Billy spoke volumes about the "Tacticals",  so and so many dealer cases that "retail" for $19.95 each.  Add in a 3 piece  Diasho set that retails for "More than the set sells for".  (Ever see the video of the guy breaking one?)

But what gets me are the fixed blade "Collectors" knives.  This one has a "retail" of  "Over $200.00", but we just added it to this deal for less than a buck.  I don't think I could ever get drunk enough to think that this was appealing.

I don't think there are buyers for everything.

A while back on another forum I saw a maker that had produced a couple of knives.

- he used interesting techniques

- he used some very cool materials (and high quality materials)

but he never sold those two knives. Simply because they were ugly as sin....I believe they're still on sale at the moment and I spotted them over a year back.

Stephen, I agree if you took a poll of knife collectors here and for that matter any knife collector out there the number of knives would be quite surprising. But I guess that's what makes it a hobby.

Unfortunately yes Frost knives are part of the equation. I guess in their case they give away what they can't sell ie" 99 cent giveaways." Check Craigslist sometime and see how many resellers are selling the knife they bought for a buck for $5 now!
