Jay, I would suggest you buy a Great Eastern instead of either of those two. You could buy a Case or Rough Rider another time but you would have a great folder that others can be judge against. Please talk to Miss Jan Carter about the GEC knives, I know she will stear you right.

I would invest the $75.00 into a GEC knife, the quality and Fit & Finish can't be beat. Case makes a great knife, but they have been hit and miss in recent purchases for me. I wouldn't go for a rough rider  at all, it's a cheap knife for a cheap price. I know there are people who are into them, but comparing knives and not price, they can't compete IMO.

I'd rather have one good American Made Knife, than 50 knives from another country that cost a few bucks a piece.

Howdy Jay, and welcome again to iKC.

While I can relate to a limited budget, what's not spelled out in your discussion is the reason you're  collecting knives.

I'm not going to try to answer your question, instead ask you some. 

What is your ultimate goal for your knives?

Are you collecting for investment?  Avoid Rough Rider and check other brands (CASE, Queen, GE, Boker, Bear and Sons, etc.

Are you collecting to use?  Rough Riders are fine knives to actually drop in your pocket and you won't feel a pinch if  it gets lost.

In the end, I have to agree with James, "I say get what catches your eye and tickles your fancy!".  You only have to please yourself.

JJ raises some interesting questions and all are valid.  Great Eastern is a fine company and does make a quality knife.  James is right Case has been around over 100 years, alas their quality as you have heard is certainly hit and miss at this time. A wise young man once said to me

I say, keep on keeping on and buy the knives that make you smile.

 

So James is right, what tickles YOUR fancy is the joy of owning the knife

Jay, this has started a desire by most to get their favorite brand knife, I think. I agree you should buy what you like not someone else what ever the brand.

Another good knife for the price is the Hen & Rooster brand

Mine started out as a favorite pattern.  You never know where it will lead.

i say buy what you like if you don't plan on resale later on.if you plan on resale later buy a  top brand.if not buy what you like that's what i do i buy all different kinds.because i probleby will keep all of them....

  It depends so much on what your intentions are, so I will try to put myself in your shoes to answer. It should be easy because my feet are 60 something years old + and my good florsheims are 30 +years old, SINCE I  have a limited budget.

  Do you have anything of real fine old fashioned quality that just brings you pleasure to own and carefully use if you want to?  S Serial number S&W, An old Rolex,  a  60-70s Mercedes-Benz, or a  50 year old Martin guitar for  examples? if you haven't accuqired these type things you probably have been busy working for a living, taking care of family first and not "wasting"  money on yourself. You have reached an age to treat yourself get at least one really fine thing.You deserve it.   I am not a museum, i wouldn't own something that i couldn't use if i wanted to.   If the kids and grand kids get something from my estate after i croak It may be unused or it may be seasoned by helping me get a job done. The GEC are very fine.  I recomend them. I saw one on Ebay go for 65 bucks identical to mine I paid 125 for. I also recommend Black Jack and Bark River.

   The Case knives of which i own the most, are very good. To many people there is nothing special about them because they are a regular production knife. you and I remember when 57 chev Bel Airs could be bought all day for 200 bucks.  same same Case knives. One of the best dollar per knife values.  I consider  every W.R Case knife  a fine thing as above described

  You used the word invest so I have avoided talking Rough Rider. The seem to be  a heck of a value for a work type knifeI have bought a dozen or so RR for gifts to people i know lose their knives at least twice a year.  I would not be found dead with a knife made in red China in my pocket.

Jay, buy what catches your eye. I think GEC are the best built made in USA knives on the planet, but I also have a ton of Rough Riders that I bought because of price. I like my Rough Riders a lot. Investment wise, the GEC or most made in USA brands are what I would buy, but I buy because I like the knife and not from an investment point of view. My kids and grand kids will ultimately end up with most of my collection. I will sure enjoy them while I am still alive and able to look at and handle them. Follow your heart and desires.

Thanks everyone for some great advice. I have made one purchase a rough rider desert muskrat.  I picked this knife in part because I want to try out the pattern.  However, I also found a website hand-tools.com that has a great selection of knives.  They also offer laser engraving (up to 33 characters) for $4.95.  I am now waitng for delivery of my engraved knife.
