A forged knife is a true example of blacksmith art, even on a large scale.  A steel blank, or piece of steel, is heated in the forge.  The maker then pounds the steel with a hammer into the rough shape of a knife.  The forged knife is heated again and more hammering follows.  Several cycles of heating, cooling, and hammering all serve to temper the steel and make the forged knife strong and not easily broken.  The forged knife will take and hold a razor sharp edge.  Because of the labor-intensive nature of its construction, a forged knife is often significantly more expensive than a stamped steel knife or one of stock removal.  Their quality and durability usually justify their higher price.

If anyone has some hammer forged knives please post a picture. I'll post some more of mine later. Some of the brands of hammer forged knives are, Randall, Treeman, ML, Bulldog folders just to name a few. I guess you would also have to consider all real Damascus knives. Lets hear ya'll thoughts.

I think I may have one.

I'll see if I can check the records to be sure.

I just recieved my knife I ordered from Larson Forge, a new knife maker, I want to tell you I am very much surprised at how well finished the knife is. It is in the old time Nessmuk pattern and is hammer forged from 5160 spring steel. It is very well made, I like it alot. The blade is razor sharp and has a wonderfull grind. It's made of 1/4" stock and the handles are pinned with brass bolts. The wooden handle material is very well exicuted, but the name excapes me at this time. I hope to have pictures and a more complete report later on in my review of this really nice Hammer Forged Knife. Thanks!

I can't wait to see pics of it Robert.

I am still trying to figure out if the knife I have is a forged piece or not. I'll look the knifemaker up and find out.

Again, I can't wait to see your knife Robert, the Nessmuck is an awesome blade.

This is a picture of my new hammer forged knife, it is much better than I thought it was gonna be. It's first class, a real nice knife, I hope the young man at Larson Forge gets alot of buisiness selling his knives.
