There are several things you notice about this knife from the minute you take it out of the package.

First the knife is integrated with the sheath it comes in. This is a refined version of the original sheath and it’s a good one. I like the way it holds the knife firmly in place yet releases with a gentle tug. Look at the round indentation in the body of the knife. It fits perfectly into the sheath which has a depression that fits into the hole perfectly. There is no real wiggle felt. When it’s in, it’s in! I could not jog it out or shake it out. The knife comes with some 1 inch strapping sufficient to strap the knife to your leg. Other suggested carry positions are belt, arm or middle back. I wore mine primarily on my leg, mounted well above my ankle. It carries easily in my boot, did not move and with a simple reach in, it could be released.

The second thing you notice upon extraction from the sheath is the sharpness of the knife itself. And its sharpness x2! One side is as sharp as the other. I mean shaving sharp.

Finally it has a point. The two sharpened sides come to a point that is also piercingly sharp. The knife also has a depression about the middle/end of the knife and it is finished off by a lanyard hole.

There is one more thing, in a classic boot knife that knife does indeed need to be grasped. That requires some spacing to accomplish that and once again there is a built in feature on the sheath, in that it is sewn over creating a layer that forces the top end of the knife slightly outward.

Look at the difference between the top loop and the bottom.

Primarily this knife would be used for defensive purposes, possibly as a backup or even a last defense. The knife could also be used for skinning with its sharp double side. In a pinch it could be tied with paracord to a branch to make an effective spear. One thing it is not, is a throwing knife. Not unless you were in a situation that demanded you resorted to that defense.

The CRKT A.G. Russell Sting Double-edged belt/arm/leg stealth knife measures 6 7/8" (175mm) overall. The knife/handle is made from one piece, black powder coated, hot-forged, 1050 carbon steel made to be virtually indestructible (HRC 54-55).
The 3 1/4" (83mm) double-edged blade is finished in a spear point and as indicated has razor sharp edges. The integral handle is contoured with thumb detents and a large lanyard hole. The custom Cordura sheath has a Zytel insert and slots/straps for belt, arm or leg carrying.

This knife was designed by A.G. Russell and according to him; the design first conceived in 1975 and eventually produced in 1977 has a timeless quality and is ever gaining in popularity.

This knife comes from CRKT with a lifetime warranty.

Good job Steve.

Excellent Hog!  What I was wondering was how it would stick out enough to not get caught up.  Great idea with the little wedge piece on the back of the sheath.  Sounds like a tuff knife with a lot of uses.  It would certainly be good to wear when hiking, or mountain lion hunting on the farm!

It is one tough knife and very different from some of the usual stuff out there, It is very adaptable and could serve as a useful tool to some. I obviously wear heavier clothing on the farm, like jeans and I had no issues with the knife hanging up. In fact my jeans pulled down comfortably over it. I would imagine a pair of cowboy boots would make it nearly invisible.

Thank you very much Clint! don't think I will ever reach your standard but I am paying attention and trying!

They look quite nice. Personally I'd spend a couple of $$$ extra and get an original A.G. Russell sting though. They can be had for $99 and are made in 440C I believe.

That is a great idea too Alexander.  For a few dollars more AG is making them with cocobolo scales and it does look like a solid knife. The hollow ground double end though looks just as promising and his comes with a belt clip for an different carry option. Perhaps at some point I will have an opportunity to review that one.

You can still find some original Stings on eBay once in a while too and they sell for much more. Its amazing to me, a different knife and it remains very functional and very popular.

If you are talking about an AG Russell original sting...then you are talking $200 and up.  I have bought and sold a few.  You can get the CRKT version at $37.95 at:  http://www.bladehq.com/cat--All-Items--1--1--search=CRKT+Sting?x=0&...  For use and carry the CRKT is a much better buy than the Russell.  A.G. Russell site says there sold out of the Black Rucarta scales but the Cocobolo scales are $79.95.  They are a cool little knife.  As suggested by members of this site I am putting one in my next article about 2012's best LEO duty knife.

Here is a picture from the AG Russell web page of his Sting. The knife looks a little different but if you study the lines it is true to form.

Steve.... The pictures are great but the basic knife is the same between the Taiwan and Chinese made.  If you want to have one to take out and look at for a while and then put it back then the Russell is the one or if you want to carry one for self defense or backup in the woods then the CRKT is the one.  The Russell has a smoother finish and better looking handles but am sold on the CRKT product.  As always, it comes down to what one wants the knife for.

Well, if I have to chose to support CRKT or A.G.....my choice is easy every time. Not only is the AGR knife smoother finished and has some better lines. It's also a better bladesteel.

But as usualy luckily there as many tastes as people. So everyone is entitled to their own preference.

I've seen it for 30-38 bucks. Looks real handy!

It sure is Pat and what is good if you are looking for a knife that will "hide well" this one fits the bill. That would be in addition to the 4  you probably already wear!
