Great advice - I will opt for lower MP's - 8-12 and be sure there is a macro setting. I found the macro setting on my Canon-the flower designation.

 

With so much to consider, I hope we make the right choice. Any suggestion as to model # on a Coolpix?

Rick is absolutely right .. practice makes perfect !!

Unlike the days of 35 mm .. no waiting for the film to develop .. no film for that matter. Get a good sized memory card (speed 10)  & shoot your heart out .. then review & edit. Seriously .. for every ONE picture I'm satisfied with .. I've taken 30~40.  I then download to my computer .. review (hope I find one I like) .. crop it & save it .. at least one copy in a reduced file format .. for email & posting.

Once you get it .. PLAY. Seriously .. take BUNCHES of pics. Then review them & analyze why the bad ones are bad. Identify what went wrong .. avoid that .. while doing it all over again. 

Get comfortable w/ the camera !!! Then, @ the game, it's all just second nature.

We went today to Best Buy and HH Greg with every intention on buying a Coolpix Nikon - but both salesman recommended this Canon Power Shot. They said they have heard great things from this camera. The one salesman got a Cool Pix out and couldn't get it going - took blurry pics. We didn't know what to do. So we got the Canon with a high (10) memory card. I have just tried it once on a knife I just got today - the Navy Rope Knife. I can't see much difference.

That is the key to getting good photos.  When I take pictures of a knife, I take many pictures with different settings and with different lighting and at different angles till I get what I want.
