Any suggestions on what new camera I should buy. Mine doesn't seem to take good close ups of my knives. I have a Canon Powershot A720IS  - 8 MP and 6x zoom. Its been a good camera for the past 4 years but its getting slow taking the shot, even with new batteries. It also does not take good pics - like ball games or graduations - they turn out dark. We are not to up on cameras and wonder if anyone has a good suggestion on an upgrade that will take care of the above problems??

Thanks.

Great advice - I will opt for lower MP's - 8-12 and be sure there is a macro setting. I found the macro setting on my Canon-the flower designation.

With so much to consider, I hope we make the right choice. Any suggestion as to model # on a Coolpix?

Rick is absolutely right .. practice makes perfect !!

Unlike the days of 35 mm .. no waiting for the film to develop .. no film for that matter. Get a good sized memory card (speed 10)  & shoot your heart out .. then review & edit. Seriously .. for every ONE picture I'm satisfied with .. I've taken 30~40.  I then download to my computer .. review (hope I find one I like) .. crop it & save it .. at least one copy in a reduced file format .. for email & posting.

Once you get it .. PLAY. Seriously .. take BUNCHES of pics. Then review them & analyze why the bad ones are bad. Identify what went wrong .. avoid that .. while doing it all over again.

Get comfortable w/ the camera !!! Then, @ the game, it's all just second nature.

Have fun !!!

Ken,

Finally, of course, practice makes perfect. The more familiar you become with your camera, the better photographer you will become.

Before processing, and after

OK we bought a new camera today. Here is a Navy Rope Knife - Camillus 4 liner - Approved USCG 1944-on our old camera

Here it is on the new one: Canon Power Shot SX160 IS

Can you see a difference?

We went today to Best Buy and HH Greg with every intention on buying a Coolpix Nikon - but both salesman recommended this Canon Power Shot. They said they have heard great things from this camera. The one salesman got a Cool Pix out and couldn't get it going - took blurry pics. We didn't know what to do. So we got the Canon with a high (10) memory card. I have just tried it once on a knife I just got today - the Navy Rope Knife. I can't see much difference.

I can read the stamping on the second pic .. I cannot on the first. Blow it up & see what you think !?!

I see what you mean - so there is a difference. I will keep trying with it and experimenting. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

Thought I'd throw this into the discussion here.  I was looking around on the web and found this PDF on Basic Knife Photography.  Thought I'd share...

Knife World Publications, PO Box 3395, Knoxville, TN 37927 ...

photography book, and get a good understanding of them. TIPS AND TRICKS Here are two good tricks specific to knife photography that you may find useful:  http://ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/knifeworld/photoarticle.pdf

I can see much more detail.

That is the key to getting good photos.  When I take pictures of a knife, I take many pictures with different settings and with different lighting and at different angles till I get what I want.
