Can I get your opinions on the D2 steel that is found on Queen knives?  I understand it is not the same as CPM-D2 which I haven't used.  I have heard good things about it though.  My main interest in any knife blade is edge holding.  Also how well a steel resists  corrosion.  Non-stainless steel is ok with me because I'll do what is needed to maintain the knife and there are lots of great corrosion protection products these days. 

I don't know when I'll get the knife I ordered this past Thursday night.  It doesn't show as shipped in my  account on the web site.  Maybe they shipped it but didn't update the computer.  That's what I'm hoping.  I get impatient when waiting for knives.  I'm sure none of you have this problem.  The knife is a Queen small lockblade (my first Queen) and it has D2 which is why I'm asking.  Any input is appreciated.

OH I think you will be pleased with the outcome of using D2...it is a great steel for cutting...and cutting. the steel itself cleans up great with minimal care and light oiling...you should enjoy it. Always wash and dry after nasty uses and light oil with food grade oil if using for food prepping...but over all you will like the performance of being able to cut and cut....Enjoy it and don't be afraid of using it.... I know I don't !!!!

I have the Queen 4180 Oak handled Fixed Blade from Queen with D2 steel. I did a review of the knife : http://www.iknifecollector.com/forum/topics/queen-cutlery-oak-fixed... I just love the knife and find it hard to NOT take it with! I am very please and I am back on the Queen bandwagon!

I'm sure you'll be happy with your new Queen. I've never used a Queen with D2 so I can't say how it is using. I've heard a number of guys here and there say they like it.

Oh, I don't know, do you call waiting at the curb next to the mailbox impatient?

I've not had any real rust on my Queen blade. Some light discolouring after cutting steaks with it but nothing much really. The stuff takes a great edge as well. Stays sharp. A little bit more effort needed to actually get sharp.

You say you're NOT familiar with CPM-D2? What are you used to? I feel that for a small blade D2 is an excellent choice. Great edgeholding.

I don't wait at the curb because I can see my mailbox from me door.  When mail has been put in it a little flag is UP.  I check for that flag about every 5 or 10 minutes starting about 11:30.  Sometimes I'll schedule walking my dog or playing with my grandson outside to be when the mailman usually comes.  Do I need help?  lol

The blade steels I've had enough experience with to form an opinion are:

AUS-8

VG-10

CPM-S30V

CTS-XHP

CPM-M4

ZDP-189

I've had a couple of Case knives with the tru-sharp SS and the Chrome-Vanadium (CV) steels.  I have mostly been using knives other than the "traditional" type in the past recent years.  I've used Gerber, SOG, CRKT and a couple of others but my favorite has been Spyderco. Now I'm developing an interest in the "traditional" type pocket knives like I used most of my life.  I believe if I use the same type of knives I used as a kid it will make me younger. :)  Girls change their hair style.  Men change their pocket knives. :)

How's this for bad Jack, When I know I might have a knife coming, I listen for the sound of tires on the gravel road....then I walk the approx half mile to the box to see what's inside. No I don't have a problem!....wait.... what's that noise?

I bought 2 small stockman knives from Queen last summer,before the Daniels family bought it.. I have mixed feelings about them. I had never had D2 before and can not compare them to other companies. I gave one to my son and kept the other for personal use. I have found that with my knife, it will not hold a hair splitting edge. It has a certain sharpness that it holds for a while, but not as sharp as I would like. I have mostly used it at work cutting monofilament fabrics, and monofilaments are hard on knives. In contrast, I have cleaned and quartered 12 squirrels in one morning and had good results with it. These results are with about a 15% convex edge.

I think that's pretty bad Steve. :)  If I had to walk that far I'd take a sandwich with me so I could hang around there for a while.  :)  The worst is when I find out someone sent me a knife UPS or FedEx.  I never know what time of day they will show up.  They don't ring the bell either.  This requires a glance out the door every 30 minutes.  Not to mention my box sitting on the ground for all to see.  Or take if they are brave enough (me have gun :)).  I wouldn't actually shoot anyone for that but I'd try to scare them with an unloaded gun.

Jack, I think edgeholding should be somewhere in between VG-10 and S30V.

But it takes a courser edge than VG-10 in general. It's not as finegrained.

I am not a big fan of D2 in general but it can make a good knife blade. With that said, I'll tell you what I found out about the Queen knives in D2, pre Daniels. The steel and it's temper were fine but the edge bevel was much too steep, for me. It took me a while to figure out the problem. Once I discovered the problem, it took me a good while to get the bevel a bit flatter, because D2 is a bit hard to shape or sharpen using oil stones.

    I now have the bevels correct for my use and it is a lot easier to sharpen and does a fine job, in the cutting department. I have not bought { shame on me } a knife from Queen since the Daniels have taken over, so I can't give an opinion or review on their knives.
