any advice for making a sheath for a full-tang hiking knife? needs a belt loop, and a snap-strap on the handle above the edge of the blade. I have a leather one that the snap-strap broke on, so if this can be repaired it would be great. if not, then i will need to make a new sheath. Pictures will come later, but any information would be helpful.

I would go Kydex and that way you don't have to worry about snap straps. You could use a tec-lok or some other belt loop.
See the discussion in this section entitled Knife Sheaths that Work. It's good that the snap broke; now it is not in the way anymore.
As a temporary fix, get a wide, short rubber band. Put it around the sheath near the top of the knife handle. When you are ready to travel (i.e., put the sheath on your belt) slide the hilt under the rubber band. |When ready to draw the knife just push the rubber band upwards with your finger. No snap strap in the way. You can make this a good permanent solution by covering the exposed portion of the rubber band with soft, thin leather or a medalion. See the picture of the oryx horn knife and sheath following my Comment on the first page of this Fixed Blade Group. The "keeper" at the top of the sheath is python skin sewn around a short, stout rubber band.
YouTube has all the answers you need! i find lots of good advice from there!
