At certain times, you need a certain knife. What are some instances when you were under knifed, over knifed or needed a certain knife?

When in Alaska, a Grizzly Bear thought I was threatening his food, he lunged at me, then stopped. It was a bluff charge, he was telling me get away. What if he would have kept coming? What knife should I have had? I probably had a pocket knife which the bear would have laughed at. My choice would have been a KaBar fighting knife.

Steve, what kind of knife would you use?

the knives I carry wouldn't have any effect on a grizzly bear. To a G.B. we are only a food source. Hopefully they cann't climb trees.

I have heard Black Bears can climb trees but Grizzlys cannot.

I have seen many deer hunters go into the woods with big fixed blades on their hip. Gut busters I call them. And then they claim their meat is wild. Way over-knifed. All you need is a pocket knife to clean your deer and be careful with that.

What do you all think?

The older I get the less I want to carry.

What do you think about a Taser?

I get the feeling a Gris would just say" Oooo, that gives me tingly feelings!" LOL!

LOL, haven't thought about a taser for a bear but I carry pepper spray

Ken, I am sorry, I strongly disagree. The use of a fixed blade has been made fun of long enough. I hunt with a fixed blade everyday, and have had to help out those with a small folder a lot! I think a knife too big for the job is over kill but a small {7 1/2} to medium {9"} fixed blade is perfect for a lot of task, in the outdoors. If disaster strikes, you're gonna want a fixed blade.

Robert, I love a fixed blade - I was referring to dressing out a deer with a long blade. For many other woods chores I would pick a fixed blade every time. And some can clean a deer with a long blade, great, but for me I use a pocket knife.

Yes, some over do it with to big a knife. I hunt with a 7 1/2" fixed blade and can do a lot with it. If just wilderness camping, I bring a 9" fixed blade. I always have a folder too....Ha..Ha..
