These pieces are in my profile picture. Issued to my father in law in 1966 when he was flying F-105s with the 421st TFS in Thailand. I've seen the knives before but never the cut down scabbard. It was issued this way not modified by the pilots. Anyone have more info? Thanks, James

Could be that the commander didn't figure that the pilots needed a leg tie.

No mention of that scabbard configuration in Wikipedia.

They took off the hook because those guys didn't wear web belts and they tied the scabbard around their calf with a piece of leather. I'm trying to find out if that mod was done at the squadron or wing level or perhaps higher up.
