Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

A wonderfully confused article on the BBC about the new ban on Zombie Knives . I have no interest in these rather garish things but I am at a loss  to see how this will make any difference to the situation in the UK .

It seems to be a matter of someone saying " these things are dangerous " and then the government bans them and we all go and have a nice cup of tea .

Carrying any slip joint with a blade of more than 3 inches is an offence .

Carrying a slip joint with a blade under 3 inches is an offence if it is used as a weapon .

Carrying any fixed blade is an offence , unless you can show good cause , fat chance of that I think .

Carrying a knife with a locking blade is an offence whatever the length of the blade ,... Leatherman anyone ?

My point is which bit of the current legislation doesn't cover Zombie Knives .

The new legislation , banning the sale, manufacture, rental or importation of zombie knives will take effect on Thursday. Anyone caught breaking the law will face up to four years in prison.

So your average zombie knife aficionado couldn't carry these things legally or use them as weapons legally as things stand . The only difference is you can no longer rent one ?? I guess you can still buy one until supplies run out ? of course you won't be able to carry one around but then you never could .

I am probably too old to understand these things .

I hope the criminals and drug dealers read this notice and decide to hand in their zombie killers at the next amnesty .

Dale,

You are so unfortunately correct.  While I find a grain of comfort in knowing we are not the only people with a government that will waste resources on a redundant law, rather than just enforcing the ones on the books, it saddens me also.

I remember , vaguely , seeing a programme on TV a long time ago which focused on the number of redundant and duplicated laws , and regulations , that were in existence . There was no conclusion of course because although politicians like to bring in new regulations to show that they actually do something they aren't too keen to get rid of the old ones that are now superseded . So every time there is any kind off incident here the cry goes up for someone to do something . I guess that is why we end up with this kind of stupidity . You could pass any kind of stupid regulations here as far as knives and firearms are concerned . The politicians and the press merely have to point to the youths hanging around on street corners and say" should these people be allowed dangerous weapons "! Because your average person has no access to , or interest in either firearms or knives then of course they are very happy to go along with "getting weapons off the streets " and ludicrous knife amnesties . They even think it's a good idea to get the knives off the street that aren't legal to be on the street as things stand .

There is only one area where this rush to legislation doesn't work and "people power" is shown to work effectively in the UK . Dogs , we love dogs and no politician can or will do anything to upset the dog lobby . Some people are killed every year by out of control dogs , there have been two in the last week the latest was a three year old . So as a gut reaction the politicians or at least the ones who don't know any better rush to suggest legislation but their ROAR'S turn to squeaks very quickly and then die away into the background noise that is political debate .
