This is one of my favorite knifes. Not because of it being from a great company, or made of great steel, or has a great fit and finish. However, I like this knife because of the memories that go along with it.
This is a knife that I won at the fair when I was 12. My parents took me to the fair and there was a booth that had a ring toss game at it. You toss a ring onto a knife that was sticking in a bored. Whichever knife you got the ring on you won. I wanted to play, but of course my mom say no i couldnt. Well while she was taking my sister on the farris wheel my dad went and let me play I'm guessing he assumed i wouldn't win. Well i did, and rung this small little keychain knife. The guy at the booth said if i got another ring on something that i could choose whatever one i wanted. My dad looked at the guy and gave him enough for another 5 rings, and sure enough I won. I know my dad got hell from my mom for allowing me to play and win that knife, but my dad was happy knowing I was happy.
THAT is an awesome story Kit. I also love that you have hung on to that knife all these years. Someday when you get a chance, be sure to write the story down as well as tell it to your son. That way the story will always be with the knife as it moves through the generations
That's a great story Kit and I think when kids are exposed to knives at an early age(yes in a safe way) I really think they learn to respect a knife and eventually may become knife collectors.
My story, was simply a trip to the hardware store with my dad when I was about 10 years old. i should preface it and say my Dad and I liked to go fishing and he always had an old jack knife he used and he let me use.(wish I still had that). When we got to the hardware store I saw this display of pocket knives sitting on the counter and I spent a lot of time just looking. My Dad was there to get his order, some lumber, a few 10 penny nails and a gallon of paint.
I was glued to that display and a yellow Imperial Fish Knife was on display. It only cost a few dollars that I had as I was a diligent saver of any money I earned. Asked my Dad if I could get the knife and he said sure. I think I was the happiest kid around and I carried that pocket knife with me for years. It kinda got worn out, a bit broken(another story) but here is a picture and I hope to have it until it can pass to my kids.
Its great to see you still have that knife Hog. I have had several over the years walk off, disappear, or some how go missing. Its good to see the ones that have the best memories are still around.
I'm a new member and really enjoyed reading these stories!
My Mother fell down steps and knocked out her front teeth when she was 10 years old. My Grandfather purchased this knife for her to cut up apples. I think this was in the late 1940's. Hopefully my Children or Grand Children will enjoy having this knife for years to come!
P.S I hope this post correctly as I am still learning how to maneuver around the site!
