I'm sure many of us have both.  Overall, which do you prefer? 

More importantly under what circumstances do you like a serrated edge and when do you like a fine or plain edge?   Also what type of serration do you like on your blade?

The only time I can think of that I like a serrated edge is for slicing bread

There is something to be said about a bread knife!

I just never have a use for a serrated pocket knife.

Does anyone see a need for a serrated blade?  and if not, then why do so many of them get sold?  I have a few serrated blades and they can cut through a lot of stuff pretty quick.  Obviously the cut isn't as pretty as what a fine edge does, but it can be very quick.

What about serrated fixed blades?  Can you see a use for them?

dont like serrated at all,unless its a flint knapped knife.

I like a plain blade no serration for me. In my opinion a serrated knife is more a saw than a knife. I will admit there is a need for a serrated blade. I just prefer the other.

Is there no one who likes a serrated blade?   Can no one give me a situation (other than slicing bread) where a serrated blade might be a good choice?

I think a job of rope cutting might be better done with a serrated edge.

I can't think of a use for a serrated blade, though that doesn't mean there isn't one. To me serrated blade = a saw.

I resisted this one for a while now. I do have a couple of knives that are partially serrated, that I couldn't get with the total plane edge.
Other than the "bread slicer", I dont have a use for serrations.

No use for a serrated blade. IMO the blade is half wasted!

Okay, I've been doing a little investigating.  Apparently a serrated blade is suppose to be an excellent choice for cutting synthetic lines (as is ropes used to rig a sailing vessels). I'm not sure if that means a fine edge is better on natural lines or not.

I've been doing some experimenting with both fine and serrated edges and it does seem that depending on what you're cutting, a serrated edge has some advantages but it can also get snagged on loose materials causing a lot of pulling and tugging.  However, a good serrated blade is going to get through bone (saw)  where as a fine edge is probably not going to make the grade.
