I've seen a lot of these sets but for much less money.

Rick
I've seen Case, Kinfolks, Western, Colonial, etc sets. Never a Buck. Cool !!!
I've ~ $30 ea in my Kinfolks & Case sets, < $15 in a couple Colonial sets ... -n- , alot miles of fun looking ...
I don't know ... is it really $1200.oo rare ... I don't know.

What's @ the base of the axe/hatchet head ... where it joins the metal shaft of the handle ??? Is it brazened together ??? It shows up in another pic too. What is it ???
I see what you mean about the joint.. to me doesn't look like the head and shaft are one piece. You may be right, on this one. Wonder how that works for strenght in use, of course I wouldn't use this set if I owned it knowing I paid nearly $1200 for it.
I have seen the Case XX models for sale at shows for as much as $600 but not more than that. That's what surprised me about this one. I figured it has to be super rare or maybe even for this particular set "one-of-a-kind"??
Just goes to show you what can happen on ebay when a bidding war happens... I had a bunch of the little Imperial imitation pearl handle trick knives and would sell them for $6-7 buy it now. After a while that slowed down so I put one up for straight auction starting at 99 cents and it sold for $26. I sold about 20 that way and never got less than $20 for them, that was about 2.5 years ago, now I can't hardly give them away.... LOL
I took another look ... the seller addresses the brazening, I do find a ?similiar? pic in Levine's 5th ed. pg. 389 upper left, "C. BUCK LIFETIME axe with original welded and brazed joints" .. no pic of a set though ...
Imperial ... what'd ya expect ... Hehe Haha

sold for > $20 ... you should feel guilty

Yeah, I've a bunch ... boxes where I wanted just the "one" knife in the box ... got a bunch of imperial/colonial/etc that way.
Yep, you are right on that...
I don't know Rick ... could be ... one of a few.
For ~ $1200 ... I personally would prefer to have a hands on looksie & a little more research.
Knife blade ?maybe? has polished pits ? Knife pomel looks polished. Hard to tell from pic.
Could be rare ... ??? don't know ???
As an aside ...

Got lucky in an antique store ~ 15 yrs ago. The dealer was happy ... I was happy.

The pic has some glare. Some honest wear is present.
Nice set and if you paid less than $100 then a lucky find.
Well ... were you the winner @ $ 1557.99 ???
