Does anyone make a jig or any kind of special tool for sharpening a gut hook on a knife blade?  I use my Buck Omni Hunter to field dress deer and the gut hook needs sharpening.

I would use a Round Diamond file for severe repair sharpening and finish with a like size ceramic rod.

a round diamond file or ceramic file. jewelers file, or several sharpener companies make round sharpeners in different thickness. i have an old set of jewelers files they work well for saws, guthooks, chainsaws,fishhooks.. you can find at big hardware stores also,..  Jeff

oh..btw,  dremel also has some very nice, higher end stones for the dremel tool ;-}

I bought an oil stone a few years back that's about 4" long and about 1/4" around. It works great on "Gut Hooks". I wish I could remember where I got it from, sorry. I have sharpened dozens of knives with it. I don't own a knife with a Gut Hook but the people that like them is fine with me. I would call them "Skin Hooks" though, because this is the way I see hunters using them.

You are right Robert.  That is exactly what they are used for.  They make opening up a deer to field dress it very easy without cutting the internals or yourself.

I have found some ceramic rods on SMKW's web site.  I thought I would get some while there in July.

well thats not quite a rounded spot to sharpen. Normally for a rounded spot like serrated on a knife I use a chain saw file. this is kind of flat so maybe if you had a smal flat file I would onlly sharpen one side and it should work pretty well if you can get in there.

I have not used ceramic but that is an idea! would like to knoww in fact how that works
