Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

There have been a lot discussions about people wanting to live off grid and in tiny houses recently. I just wanted to know what any of your thoughts are on this idea. I think it would be awesome to have a small house to live in and would enjoy living a simpler life. My problem is, the rest of my family doesn't agree. They have become to dependent on the "luxuries of life". I think living off grid would lead to a healthier and less stressful life style. I know it would be a lot of hard work, but a little hard work never killed anyone.

I absolutely agree!  We have learned to live in 650 square feet and it really is awesome.  Many things we "had to have" in a bigger house just turned out to be stuff we did not really need.  We did not go off grid but going tiny is great!  I wish we had more solar options but with tree coverage and retrofitting it is just not practical.  We went as far as we could, using wood stove for heat, all solar on the outside of the house, ect

That is great Jan, that you and Donnie have been able to down size. I hope that we are able to do the same in the next few years.

We could certainly downsize, in the future. We doubled the size of the house when the kids were little.
Can't see Linda and I staying after the girls leave.
Only trouble will be in relocating, all of Linda's family lives nearby.

That is one of my considerations as well J.J. I am not sure where we would go for sure. My mother-in-law will probably follow us where ever we go, since the wife is her only family. I am will to relocate, not so sure about the wife though.

OK, so everyone just move to N Ga, close enough to visit :)

I am in Jan. Just need to get the rest of the family to buy into it (mostly the wife).

Truckers have neen living in "small houses" for decades now. I'm not saying you should become a trucker and take the family on the road with you. Zeus knows it is not a job for everyone.
But, along the same line of thinking, there are many families that live full time in a 25 to 40 foot motorhome.
Advantages include being able to relocate without going through the hassle of selling your current home, and finding a new home where you're going, NO PACKING AND UNPACKING! (I hate to pack and unpack) you can avoid the cold north in the winter and the melting hot south during the summer.
If you live on or near the coast, or a major river, a 35 to 50 foot or so sailboat or trawler is another option. Want to go to Europe? Sail on over. Liveaboard marinas are fairly common, and usually have reasonable slip rates. Lower than it costs to rent/lease an apartment, in many cases.
When I lived on my boat, the boat payment and slip rent were half the cost of renting an apartment.
Yes. I named the boat 'CHEAPER THAN RENT'. I had to move inland to another state for my job, and had to sell the boat, though.
I currently live full time in a 14 foot travel trailer. (I'm single, and live alone.)
