Well, I'm one of those who have problems deciding just what knife is my "favorite". Judging by my "collection" of 30 or so knives both folding and fixed, I think I subconsciously try to collect at least one of everything. My collecting ways are genetic, having been raised by a true Dust Bowl "junker", and my knives were basically just another tool, not necessarily something to collect. I like good tools, therefore I buy and admire any knife I consider to be high quality, and therefore a "good tool". I also don't have any knife that I haven't used at one point or another, and avoid high-dollar commemorative or "serialized" knives for that reason. The decorations adorning the walls of my home are mostly century old hand tools that were handled and used by past generations of my family, and I treasure them for that reason much more than for their antique "collectible" value. My knives will be handed down to my succeeding generations, and I use all my knives so that my grandson will know that I held, used and appreciated that object. Hopefully he will appreciate them as much as I appreciate my father's and grandfather's knives & tools, (which he will eventually inherit).
With that in mind I'll post a pic of what may not be my favorite, but is my most beloved and treasured. This knife has been my camping companion for over 50 years, and has cleaned and skinned many a deer, (and lots & lots of game birds). My father said he bought it for himself as an 18th birthday present for himself in 1926, (because he said Grandma wouldn't let him have one before then): Kinfolks K380 Skinner, stacked leather handle, CV steel, with original leather sheath, and still in good condition. I still use it at least once per year, though I have retired the original sheath to preserve it, and had a new leather sheath made at the local leather shop to hold it when I carry it now. I added the conchos and an old belt for personal decoration, (remember, raised by a junker...waste not want not...good use for a worn out old belt).
With that being said, I'll post a pic of my current "favorite" EDC, having just scored it at the local swap meet. Pre 1931 New York Knife Co, Hammer Brand Pen Knife, (or as Tobias refers to them, "equal ended pen knife"). Bone handle, remarkably preserved, sharp and tight as any knife I own. I'm still glowing from finding such a cool knife at a swap meet, so it will be my fave for some time I suspect.
So there you go, my most treasured, and my current "favorite". Can't narrow it down any more than that.....at least until I find another swap meet treasure, and ya know I'll never stop looking.
thanks for your post jim, and passing along your knowledge to us!
I started collecting knives when I was 6 years old; but, my favorite knife came to me much later. A few years after I married my wife, Brenda, I was involved in hunting whitetail deer for a source of protein. At that time we processed our own game. My usual knives that I used to skin, dress and package included a couple of Uncle Henry Sharp fingers. They worked "ok" but I had to resharpen them at least once or twice on a large deer. This was accompanied by colorful language and a general mess. Then, one Christmas eve my wife gave me a George Walker Damascus hunter with a blackwood handle. Not only did the knife do the work; but, it could go through two deer with the need of sharpening, and it was (and is) beautiful. I still use that knife and hope to for many years to come.

Lars,
I have been meaning to ask you if you made it to the Bowie exhibit in Arkansas?
Well after two week, I suppose it's time to post another favorite. In keeping with my S&W theme, this week's favorite is my Texas Hold 'em Bowie. I am not a fan of commemorative or other "special edition" stuff on the blades, but it's a Smith & Wesson Bowie - so I scooped it up a few years back.
Made by Taylor Brands under license from S&W, this frame has been used for several different special editions, including the long running Texas Rangers. You you can still find some dealers with a limited inventory of the Texas Hold 'em knife, this frame is no longer being produced.
sweet s&w bowie you have there lars
Lars,
I teared up also. This is what it is all about. That knife just went from "a knife I once gave my dad" to "A Knife I will NEVER get rid of!". My recommendation, print that piece of the discussion and put it with the knife. Someone someday will want to know
Arizona Follow-up: Well to say the least, he was thrilled! This baby dressed those ribs like they were butter - he couldn't be happier. And - it is his first Damascus piece, so to him, it's a work of art to be used only for the BBQ.
As a surprise to me - he gave me back a S&W Bowie I gave him 30 years ago when he moved to Alaska. I thought he used it a lot back then - only now I discovered he kept it mint all these years! This is the companion Bowie to my Outdoorsman (refer to my March 2 posting in this thread) by Blackie Collins.
A tear forms in my one good eye when I think about it! Here is my Favorite for this week - my Smith & Wesson model 6020 Bowie...
Be sure to let us know how your Dad likes it and hey, I want some ribs please
