The online community of knife collectors, A Knife Family Forged in Steel
Some data - stick tang blade, 1.2379 (D2) steel, hardened up to 60 HRc, guard and heel made of stainless steel (AISI 304), red fiber spacers, rotten oak handle, impregnated with linseed oil. Calf blank sheath.
I wanted to make a knife with rotten oak handle, because I really like the flader of the tree. This blank had a very interesting asymmetrical pattern that after treatment with linseed oil literally was shining. The oak is easy to work with and needed almost no additional smoothing. Before the impregnation I smoothed it with sandpaper up to grit 1500, but it was not necessary. I think I could stop at grit 800, but I wanted to see what will happen. This smoothness, combined with the pleasant, warm wood color and pattern makes a very pleasant to the touch and appearance handle.
Besides being glued with epoxy, the handle is riveted for better certainty. The tail is not welded, but I have shaped it on the grinder to the required diameter (about 4mm). Than - gently with the hammer. I hit the hilt a few times, but this I will call "Persian defect".
The sheath is a "pocket". It is made of calf blank and is oiled with linseed oil. While oiling I tried to make it spotted, but could not make it.
