Gift from in-laws after my father in law passed away. It was his, he carved his name into the sheath.

Brad, that would be greatly appreciated!

I can see if he is willing to part with it.

Brad, you're right!

That does drive me crazy, because you have just described exactly what I am looking for: A W49 in mint condition!

Oh well! I hope the bro-in-law appreciates what he has!

Ron,

This will probably drive you absolutely nuts, but there is a 2nd one that I told my Bro-n-law to keep. That one was in near perfect condition, as was the sheath the last time I saw it. I wanted this one because Jack always had it hanging next to his work/leisure table in his garage.

Brad, no worries! I had taken your word for this knife being a W47 -- I was just pointing out the differences in the two. I know that when I first looked at your knife I assumed that it was a W49. But you had the knife in hand, so I was taking your word for it.

Since it actually is a W49; that makes it all the better, and I truly am envious. Yours is a beautiful example of an iconic knife! That it was a gift from your father-in-law makes it priceless!

Cheers, my friend!

Ron,

Thanks pointing out my error, this knife is a W49. I also have a W77 Dagger, for some reason I always mingle the last digits of those 2 knives.

Wow! That's a beautiful knife! And it's great that you had such a great relationship with your father-in-law.

I've been looking for a Western Bowie W49. I believe the W47 has a slightly shorter 7 1/2" blade compared to the W49's 9 1/2" -- The OAL of the W47 is 11 3/4" vs. 14 3/4" for the W49.

They are both outstanding knives. And that W47 of yours is a real beauty, Brad!

Well, he and I spent a lot of time together after he asked me to help run his business in 2005.  Even more so after his wife of 60 years passed away in 2009. He was a good person to have as a friend, I miss him.
