In case you have been under a rock over the last month or so, Apple's newest piece of computing technology- the iPad- hit the stores yesterday.
Yes, even though I pre-ordered one that will ship late April with 3G, I couldn't stand it and blasted top-down to the nearest Apple Store and grabbed one for the family :-) It is the regular WI-FI (non-3G) model.
So, I am happy to report iKC is now live and able to be viewed on the fabulous device. The iPad is a touch screen computer designed for non-power users. It is perfect for surfing the web, email, viewing pictures, movies (ones you load or from Netflix) and watching YouTube vids. It is also designed as an ebook or magazine reader.
To me it is ideal for folks who don't tend to use major computing power editing videos or pictures, working spreadsheets or things like that. Instead it is for casual computer users or, for me, when I don't want to lug my MacBook Pro around on business trips.
Another target group is the 40 million iPhone users, who love the functionality but "just want a little more." It is designed similar to the iPhone but much more functional as a true computer.
The screen size is big enough to be practical for its intended purpose too.
Right out of the box the iPad has a slick but very solid feel. Not a plastic-like feel some tech-toys do.
Will it replace my laptop? Probably not. But when I just want to have access to the web it will be much better than staring at my iPhone when trying to follow directions to my next appointment, or posting here at iKC. It will also let me hook it up to a projector to show my powerpoint (Keynote) presentations and this capability significantly added value for me to justify getting one.
