Self DefenseWeapons-luxury or neccesity?? You Decide--

Let me preface this by saying I am a typical 60 year old law abiding citizen-In my 20's I worked as a bartender, then in retail management until my retirement- However, I have had people try to kill me with a car ,boulders, knives, hatchets, etc. in what would seem to be a normal life-Not to mention, that Danny Rollings, the Florida serial killer who killed U of Florida coeds was captured in my yard !! I have had to defend myself twice with a gun, once with a knife, and once with  a (imaginary gun)- long story --Never hurt anyone in any of these encounters, but being armed saved my bacon more than once- Am I just the unluckiest guy on earth, or  have any of you other folks had hair-raising encounters like this??

Well John - I have had to defend myself many times but only one time did I bring my knife out of my pocket and only one time did I point my handgun at another person with every intention of pulling the trigger if I needed to.  If you have had people try to kill you with cars, boulders, knives, and hatchets . . . maybe you need to stick around here and keep better company.  :-)

I feel you need to be able to protect yourself, family, or others when in danger. My dad was in law enforcement and my best friends dad the sheriff of the county,  I worked farm work for room and board on his farm. I spent many hours riding with both on calls and patrol and seen plenty of times self defense was the only option. And that was in times when violence was not like it is today. John, you seem to be mighty lucky and smart!

The one time I used a knife to defend myself I was picking up  money  from several registers in my store at Christmas time- I was not allowed to carry a sidearm at work- A bad guy walked up behind me, spun me around, hoping to snatch the bank bag and run- By sheer reflex I pulled my Western boot knife out of my boot and aimed it at his throat- Enough to scare him off like his pants were on fire, and no knife fighting skills required !!

I think that if you don't know how to use a knife in a fight and some how you get caught up in one, the best thing to do is just defend yourself. No offensive moves, just make quick and short defensive moves. Just my idea of what to do. I have had no knife fighting lessons.

I think a weapon is necessary enough that I carry two, a .38 and a .380.  I carry a knife but if the situation ever deteriorates enough that I need to pull a weapon, it will be one of the first two, not the knife!

Robert- point taken and agreed too-My  whole intent is to demonstrate no matter how much of a law abiding life you lead, sh*t happens!! It doesn't  have to happen numerous times, as in my life, but once is often one too many times-My former fiance was stabbed to death  with her own kitchen knife when she arrived home and walked in on a burglar- You can be a big guy, but unarmed against armed is  still a serious disadvantage-My whole point is-can the unarmed survive without a weapon these days?? My GF, owned a gun, knew how to use it, but was no match for a man with a knife when she did not have it with her ~

John, we may have gotten off the subject of the Discussion. We are just talking about personal events instead of the main question asked.

I say yes a personal weapon is a necessity now days.

Let me clarify a little- The rocks, knife, hatchet attacks were shoplifters I was trying to arrest-When I defended myself with a knife and once with a gun, it was from people trying to rob me of large sums of money from my store-The other time I used a gun was to scare off a group of pimps trying to beat my next door neighbor to death in MY yard when they mistakenly thought he had stolen from them.-The guy who tried to kill me with his car was the husband of an employee I had commited the unpardonable sin of giving her the weekend off ?? He is  currently doing an extensive prison term- The other guy who pulled a gun on me was just plain nuts !! The imaginary gun is when a bar patron, recently released from a prison work farm and high on LSD tried to remove my head with a pool cue when I turned down the volume on the jukebox at the request of other patrons- The threat of the imaginary .357 I told him I had under the bar scared him off-In other words, bad stuff can happen to law abiding people when you least expect it !! BTW, retail management ain't always easy !!

Boy hood scrapes are one thing and should be taken as such, with no weapons. Professional people run into a whole different type of people, when enforcing the Laws. Military personnel also run into a really bad sort of people that carry weapons and have plans to use them if they can. You never know when one of these bad type people will spill over into the world of nice people.
