they replaced the knife and it seems it is ok now.... but still......... the confidance is a bit damaged here with me !
i think i will not get this helle
i am looking at the new brusletto rondane for a "winter knife" now oh i like this word haha ( and hope my wife will too ) it has no scandi but a beautifull convex straight blade and is about the same size as the utvaer
......... and i always still have the undestructible super lionsteel M-5 ( one of the best in this size and prize range ) and thank god there are much more options cos we can never have enough good knives right ??
So apparently, from something Ju-Bushcraft-Alpin posted in the comments below the video, he contacted Helle & Hell said something was wrong with just that knife specifically.
Fortunately, the reviewer posted this video as well:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVyDXFpvrwA&feature=iv&anno...
Because I don't speak French, I can't tell if Helle replaced his knife with a new knife, or if the company simply reground the knife (but it seems like it might be the latter). The bevel looks pretty rough in this video, & I heard something about the edge being slightly convexed...
Now I'm looking over my Eggen. Fortunately the bevel on the Eggen seems much flatter, much more similar to my Moras than to the Utvaer's in the first video...
What the...?!?
For everyone that doesn't speak French (& I don't), & who doesn't want to go through this 30 minute video (I did a lot of fast forwarding), that edge gets some serious chipping on dead pine branches starting at about 19:30 or so into the video. The reviewer keeps doing the test, & the knife, not surprisingly, keeps failing. I haven't finished the video yet, I'm only about 22 minutes in.
Sure, maybe it was a heat treat issue, but I doubt it. If you look closely, you'll see that the "scandi" edge bevel they put on the knife is done with a hollow grind. HOLLOW GRIND. Not a flat grind zero bevel. What were they thinking?!?
Actually, I'm certain they were thinking that making the edge nice & thin like that would give it incredible slicing ability (& it certainly seems to do that).
But then someone comes along & batons that little sucker into some small pine branches & Voila! chip chip chip chip...
Thank you, Kees, for calling our attention to this. This particular knife was really, really high on my list (I was just waiting ot see if the price was going to come down a little at some point). If this video gets any traction, I'm guessing that knife is going to come down in price real fast. What I hope they'll do is recall the knives they've sold & distributed & replace them with a classic flat scandi grind.
Here it is, Valentine's day, & Helle has broken my heart, just a little...
WARNING !!
for people who are thinking about buying the (very beautiful) HELLE UTVAER as a bushcraft knife

it is laminated stainess ( couldn find out what kind ) but something is not ok with the core !!!
i was planning this one for my collection but........ noooooooo way now
