Collection "Shake-up"

Been thinking of changing the direction of my collection. Someone said: sell off some knives to make room for new ones. I like all my knives but I could sell some. Wondering what direction to take.

Any thoughts on the subject?

All depends on what you would like to accomplish? Some things to consider:

Collect by Brand
Collect by Pattern
Collect Custom
Collect Vintage
Collect Prototype
Collect by handle material
Collect fixed blades
Collect folders
Collect only custom makers
Collect local custom makers

Well you get where this is going....

I like vintage Hobo's and a few vintage brands. Vintage knives have a lot more of a hunt to find certain ones. It's easier to just order new knives. I enjoy the hunt.

I have about 250 kinves. Maybe I could sell 100??? I really have never tried to sell a knife. How would I go about it.?? I was thinking about picking my favorite 5 knives to keep out of my various brands and sell the rest. Just not sure. I think when I cut back, I will be able to consider what to collect next. I really like vintage users. Knives with character that I can still carry and use. There is a lot to think about.

I for one would like to see your collection by way of video or still pictures of the knives you are willing to sell and a little history & condition of knife,also if rare ? Then will make offer by email, just a though ! All the best! Jeff

Ken,

You know the knives that you always "fondle" when you're looking them over? Those are the keepers, everything thing else is for sale.

Be realistic with your expectations concerning value, you rarely get what you expect.

I don't think I can advise you Ken. Knife collecting is a very personal thing. I've seen people in the past take someone's advice on which way to collect and many of those people ended up being unhappy.

Even though I concentrate on one brand now, I'm always going in circles when deciding which pattern to get next! LOL! And even though I TRY to concentrate on one pattern, I feel other patterns calling.......and many times I answer! LOL!

So, for me, I go by what is exciting me at the time I get my knife allowance! LOL!

I built a collection of about 30 Remington bullet knives and lost interest,so I've sold about half so far.They were just sitting in a box and frankly,they're not very exciting knives. I also had a lot of barlows, also sold most of them-too heavy for EDC. Now I;m on to Case slimlines-the perfect EDC, boy's knives and French and Spanish work knives.

Well we all know I have a hard time selling off any of my collection. We have changed directions many times, probably 3 or 4 over the years. I agree. When it comes out of the box and you smile and fondle it.......Thats a keeper

Andrew, I have a nice collection of Remington Year knives but I want to keep them. Sounds like you were feeling just like I am now.

Yeah, me too. The thrill of the hunt is major when I'm looking for a collectable or "future" collectable knife. Going after "future" collectables is like gambling (and I'm not a gambler) - it's probably the only gambling I've done and I believe its paid off most of the time. Yep, that's the thrill for me. Cataloging, storing, displaying the knives is the zen part for me - the entire world disappears - poof - its me and the knife.
