Old Solingen pocket knives.

Posted by Ivars on January 29, 2011

Hallo! I start this group because I have a small Solingen pocketknife, whitch I get from my granddad when I was aprox. 6 yars. I wasnt carrying good this knife. But I have it to day!

Tis is my Solingen This solingen is manufactured in the midle of world wars. Because it was buyed in the small bordertown before second world war. Than in town was a tradesfolk shops from Germany.

Knife isnt large.

The grips on handle isnt original. Grips was maded by my father. The original grips from my memories was something amazing for me! Grips was maded from material what lookesa like glass. Under the glass on one side was a picture with castle or somethink like this and a knight on a horse. Other side I dont remember unfortunately! But grips was dameged and my father decided to take tham off and make from peace of plastick a new grips, whitch you can see in the pictures!

Unfortunately how I sead I wasnt a good knife keeper and when I was yung boy I throw this knife in the tree. And once I broke a small blade.

Writed on the blades:

On large blade one side

Other side

On the small blade:

one side

On the other side is origina SOLINGEN sheap on stand.

This is my Solingen! If you have this with original/non original grips or other type of Solingen pocket knife! Place a review here!

Respectfully,

Ivars.

Ivars ..

Levines 3rd Edition  lists "Balke & Schaaf" as being active around 1910 & confirms the Lamb pic as their trademark or reference .. not sure if they were an actual manuf though.

The historical information

Firm C Friedrich ERN, Wald Solingen is one of the best, the oldest in Solingen and the most known manufacturers of open razors.

The company has arisen from small grinding service near to Haan, in Ernenkotten where Carl Wilhelm Ern has employed to itself the master-polisher on surname Voos.

Officially grinding service worked since 1848, and larger buildings in which Carl Wilhelm worked with four sons have been constructed. One of them, Nathanael Ern (1822-1878), was successful grinder, but with 1860 it made production only for greater enterprises, including for Henckels Zwillingswerk. In Ernenkotten at Nathanael Ern its senior son Carl Friedrich Ern (1850-1924) who subsequently and has glorified firm C Friedrich ERN.

Nathanael Ern
(1822-1878)

Carl Friedrich Ern in 1865 has begun training at the father. Already at early age it has started to do tableware, including for Johann Abraham Henckels. Possessing talent in the business, in 1873 it has adjusted own manufacture of open razors. For maintenance of high quality of production in Kotten it establishes own smithy and heat treat service.

Carl Friedrich Ern
(1850-1924)

Work in grinding service in Haan did not stand on seat, and eventually there were new ways of processing of metal. Polishing of concavities Hohlschleifen, polishing of concavities Pliesten1 and polishing of razors have been finished to a special level of skill and the highest quality, in particular in families Ern and Linder.

Schleifmaschine "Hexe"

Business went most advantageously, and per 1876 the enterprise has moved in Wald, Solingen.

In an interval between 1880 and 1910 company exported many thousand razors to the USA, using a brand ' Crown and Sword Razor Works'.

In 1902 firm has won a gold medal in Düsseldorf, in 1904 grand prix at in C-Lui, in 1910 grand prix at in Bruxelles and in 1911 same award in Milan.

Within 1914-18 very good fighting knifes with marks ERN above inscription Wald, Rheinl have been made many. Knifes were marked the same as razors.

In 1921 firm has got factory Turban-Scherenfabrik Muller and Co. And after that made razors at factory Turban-Scherenfabrik, using their trade mark « a head with a turban ».

In 1922 the firm has brought three factories in advertisements: factory on manufacturing open razors (Rasiermesserfabrik) in Wald, Solingen; factory on manufacturing belts (Streichriemenfabrik) in Wald, Solingen; and factory on manufacture of scissors (Scherenfabrik) in Solingen.

Schleifraum im Ernenkotten, 1928

During board of the Third Reich the firm was not engaged in manufacturing of knifes, but on HJ a knife there was mark ERN, Solingen and a crown with ятаганом. Pocket knifes also were branded by trade mark ERN. To 1940 firm represented only two trading marks: « a crown and short asian sword» and « an eagle with the snake ».

In 1939 owners have been recorded With Friedrich Ern younger and Richard, Отто and Fritz Ern.

The factory exists till now, its contact information: 1A Carl Friedrich Ern Versand GmbH, z. Hd. Frau Giannou, Wittkuller Straße, 51, 42719, Solingen, tel. 0212/38070.

Notes

1 Pliesten - the word «pliesten» is, possibly, transformation become obsolete «pließen», an early writing «plyßen». In old documents it is spoken, that from «plyßmoelen» it was formed «pleißmühlen» and «plyßampt». Those who was engaged «Plyßen» referred to «Plyßer», but there are also "polyßer." Merlot, "Sasworter" in Cologne, historical analogies "Association Niederrhein", 48 Notebook, Cologne 1889, p. 177: ' A strange similarity to the French word "polisseur", "polisher", that it comes from the word, or at least dependent '. Similar to the word "Polish". Later, then "polyßer", "plyßer" was converted into "Pliester", and then a verb "pliesten". If vstravit′ "t" like the word is also found in Dutch: "polijster"-polisher "polijsten" and Polish '.

MY ERN

C Friedrich Ern - Rasiermesserfabrik, Solingen-Wald.

Founded 1873. Had 100s of trademarks.

This one the most common, registered 1896. And one of only two still in use after 1940.

This knife is post-WWII, marked for export.

If it is 3-3/4" long closed, pattern # is 4099. Shown in a 1950 ad. Synthetic handles.

Chip on master blade

Great little knife,  found this...

Carl Friedrich ERN, Solingen-Wald.

The company was founded in 1873, registrated December, 4 1874.
Located at Solingen-Wald in 1922 and at Kanalstrasse 43 in 1939.

    Carl Friedrich Ern
       (1850-1924)

Carl Friedrich Ern family were razor-grinders (the Wupper grinders, after Wuppertal), and he took over his fathers company - they honed razors for other firms (in 1860 Nathaniel Ern only ground and honed razors for Henckels), but soon began to make their own razors. Nathaniel taught his son Carl to do the job - at that time there were 20 workers and seven masters. Singing and talking were forbidden, drinking never allowed. The company moved to Wald (to Wittekulle), an outlying district of Solingen, in 1876. In 1893 they introduced the 'Hexe' machine to hollow-grind razors, said to be a benefit to all razor makers.

Tang stamp matches one he used but I can not figure out what the RC means. I think it is post WW2 but not sure. Not allot of info out there on this knife. Mostly about razors. Any help will be great!

Question on a Bruckmann knife

Posted by Dave Taylor on December 19, 2013

I recently acquired a very nice Bruckmann 3 3/8 Pearl Senator from my friend A. G. Russell.  The knife is marked EB EXTRA and I am wondering just what this marking means.  Can anyone help?

I am thinking perhaps the EB may stand for Ernest Bruckmann, but what about the EXTRA?  This knife is one of the Salesman's Sample knives offered by A. G. and I would like to find out more about it.  Can anyone give verifiable information as to just what this marking means please?

Thank you in advance for any and all information.

A miniature antique knife made in Gathen Solingen. No idea how old it is, but I would say at least 50 years old?
