TSA Knives is thinking “SFO HUNTING KNIFE”

Hess Knifeworks was established in 2005, after many years of working for other knife companies. Whether we are building our own brand or working on someone else's knives, our goal remains the same, and that is to make high quality "Made in the USA" bench made custom knives.

Greg is asking…how would YOU modify this knife?

Entry for this month is easy.  Enter as many times as you would like.   Help Greg decide what the hunters, collectors, knife folks would ask for if they could make this knife their own?  Give us your ideas.

And what will the winner receive?  How about a HESS knife?

Cocobolo Wood

2.5 inch total length Blade
1095 high carbon steel
1/8" thick blade

Notch for Firesteel use

Brass Lanyard Tube

Brown Leather Belt Sheath

This contest will run the month of August and Greg @ TSA Knives will choose the winner.  So enter often and lets help Greg build an SFO he and Hess Knifeworks can be proud to offer.

With the short wide blade and long narrow handle, it looks a little bit out of proportion to me.  I would like a longer blade, maybe not quite so wide, and a fuller handle.  I think it would handle better, at least for me.

(But if that is the prize, and I win it, no way would I turn it down!  LOL)

LOL, well it certainl;y is the prize...Here it is in Gregs Hand

Lets open this up a bit

Here is Greg at TSA Knives Hess Page

Hess Knifeworks

All the knives are this page are open for the contest.  The prize remains the Mini Caper shown above but let's give Greg some thoughts on any Hess he has.

REMEMBER THE PURPOSE OF THIS CONTEST TO TAKE AN EXISTING HESS AND MODIFY IT TO BE AN SFO FOR TSA KNIVES

I think I like it just like it is.

Generally, I  like this knife- Beautiful in it's overall look-The two things that bother me- Blade to handle ratio is off- Lengthen the blade, or shorten the handle-Judgimg from your later photos, increasing the blade length would be better. The second thing that bothers me is the safety of the knife- Take your choice- Jimping, changing the profile of the ricasso, a guard, or finger grooves on the scales- Anything to prevent your hand slipping forward inadvertantly- Obviously, you can dress this knife up or down with different handle scales, mosaic pins, etching, etc.- I like the basic look, with many numerous variations possible---

BTW, I love the sheath !!

Fantastic Knife!  Hi Greg, thanks for the giveaway.  I have purchased a number of knives from you over the years.  I have looked at that knife in the past.  I would like to see the length increased to just shy of 3".  That would make it a real nice hunting/camping knife.  I am not sure of the grind?

It's a beautiful knife for one thing. But if your looking for my amateur opinion, I would grind out the tang area to create a finger choil. I would make the back end a little larger to make gripping it in a pull stroke more efficient. Also add some jimping at the forward end of the blade for more control during caping. I assume it is intended for skinning and I feel these changes would make it better for that job. Add a scandi grind, I'm a bit partial to it.

I am with Ken on this I like it the way it is, and with the large"Caper "you get a three and a half inch blade.

Offer the knife with some type of jigging on the handle to provide a better grip, whether that would be stag, bone, or some type of synthetic material.

John, you are correct. That is why I opened it up to all Hess on the TSA site.  The Large Caper is much the same but with a longer blade.

Gary, I like the idea of a "grippier" handle

I would change the blade geometry.  I'd make it a wharncliffe and add some gimping to the spine.  I would also give a new profile to the grip.   What the heck.... a picture is worth a 1000 words.

Just jimping on top for the thumb. Thats all. Beautiful knife.
Thanks for the chance!

Just read comments about it being "grippier". In theory I like it, but a working knife will fell much better in the hand with a smooth wooden handle. A grippier knife will make the hand sore after a while of repetitive cutting. My2¢ :D
