TSA Knives is thinking “SFO HUNTING KNIFE”
Hess Knifeworks was established in 2005, after many years of working for other knife companies. Whether we are building our own brand or working on someone else's knives, our goal remains the same, and that is to make high quality "Made in the USA" bench made custom knives.
Greg is asking…how would YOU modify this knife?

With the short wide blade and long narrow handle, it looks a little bit out of proportion to me. I would like a longer blade, maybe not quite so wide, and a fuller handle. I think it would handle better, at least for me.
(But if that is the prize, and I win it, no way would I turn it down! LOL)

Generally, I like this knife- Beautiful in it's overall look-The two things that bother me- Blade to handle ratio is off- Lengthen the blade, or shorten the handle-Judgimg from your later photos, increasing the blade length would be better.The second thing that bothers me is the safety of the knife- Take your choice- Jimping, changing the profile of the ricasso, a guard, or finger grooves on the scales- Anything to prevent your hand slipping forward inadvertantly- Obviously, you can dress this knife up or down with different handle scales, mosaic pins, etching, etc.- I like the basic look, with many numerous variations possible---

Fantastic Knife! Hi Greg, thanks for the giveaway. I have purchased a number of knives from you over the years. I have looked at that knife in the past. I would like to see the length increased to just shy of 3". That would make it a real nice hunting/camping knife. I am not sure of the grind?

It's a beautiful knife for one thing. But if your looking for my amateur opinion, I would grind out the tang area to create a finger choil. I would make the back end a little larger to make gripping it in a pull stroke more efficient. Also add some jimping at the forward end of the blade for more control during caping. I assume it is intended for skinning and I feel these changes would make it better for that job. Add a scandi grind, I'm a bit partial to it.

Offer the knife with some type of jigging on the handle to provide a better grip, whether that would be stag, bone, or some type of synthetic material.

John, you are correct. That is why I opened it up to all Hess on the TSA site. The Large Caper is much the same but with a longer blade.

I would change the blade geometry. I'd make it a wharncliffe and add some gimping to the spine. I would also give a new profile to the grip. What the heck.... a picture is worth a 1000 words.

Just read comments about it being "grippier". In theory I like it, but a working knife will fell much better in the hand with a smooth wooden handle. A grippier knife will make the hand sore after a while of repetitive cutting. My2¢ :D
