I reckon it could be period,but it's not original.

Ya,I bet it unscrewed and the metal pummel was lost and replaced with the wood maybe.if I could find a replacement tang nut and pummel I'd go for it. It's agreat minty example though! Thanks for the reply Jim!
Probably served the original owner, well, after the repair.

Both are not marked. It's got some rust but how many chances do ya get to buy one affordably? :)
