Thanks Dale!

I prefer the full coverage stones, but anxious to hear your impressions on your purchases.

I performed a different search this time. Instead of JUST lowest $ .. I considered a few other criteria.

.

I considered the usable area .. minimum I'm listing is 2.7" X 6.7" .. usable surface area of 18.1in ^2.

I required a larger range of grits .. specifically .. 1000 & above.

I also required full coverage of the abrasive material over the usable surface.

.. then ..

I considered the pricing.

.

The 2.7” x 6.7” offers a surface area of 18.1 in^2. It comes in a range of grits .. from 80 to 3000. The least expensive is the 3000 grit @ $4.99. The mid range of 400 to 2500 grit finishes are $5.99. The lower grits .. from 80 to 320 .. are the most expensive @ $6.99.

.

Next up is the 3.14” x 9” that offers a surface area of 28.26 in^2. It is also offered in a range of 80 to 3000 grit. Any one of these will set you back $7.99.

.

I found a 6” x 6” sharpening “plate” providing 36 in^2 of sharpenin... It is offered in grits ranging from 240 to 3000. The cost is $15.99.

.

The largest I found was a 7.8” x 7.8” .. offering a 60.84 in^2 shar... The available grits are limited on this unit .. to 240 , 600 , 1000 . & 2000 grit finishes. One of these will set you back $18.75.

.

Shipping is inclusive .. the listed price is to your mailbox.

The shipping time is 2 weeks to a month.

Yes .. they're all straight from China.

I like my Dia-Sharp cards, but they can be on the pricy side, depending on where you get them. Ordered up several of the 6.7x2.7 stones. Personally, went with the 800 and up.
We'll see how these stack up.

I ordered a couple f the same size .. 2.7" X 6.7".

I choose the 2000 & 3000 grit models.

These are full coverage "stones".

Unlike the 400 & 1000 grit that I ordered earlier.

Will make for an easy comparison .. full coverage .vs. not.

I'll let you know if I note any noticeable difference in performance .or. longevity.

.

At this point .. I think I'm good on diamond whetstones for awhile.

unless

I bite on that 6" X 6" "plate".

.

Best wait till the current ordered units arrive & undergo evaluation.

OK, mine are listed as shipped...

I checked .. mine finally did too.

Well , JJ .. I understand your preference for full coverage stones.

.

They arrived today .. the "silver" units pictured above. I ordered one each of the 400 & the 1000 grit versions.

.

The 400 grit is a full coverage stone. However, the "grit rating" is not identified anywhere on the unit itself. It is now ..but.. not as manufactured. Other than than .. it's a flat 2.5" X 5.96" probable 400 grit whetstone. It's coarser than I have a current need for. Actual evaluation of it's abrasive qualities will be later.

.

The 1000 grit partial coverage stone. I will never again purchase a partial coverage stone. I'm guessing .. once it's broken in .. all will be fine. BUT. I ran A.G. Russell's Woodstalker across it ..and.. caught the edge of one of the hexagonal abrasive "pads". Abby became alarmed with the resultant cursing. I believe this will be relegated to sharpening wood chisels & such.

.

In the overall scheme of things .. a cheap lesson.

Dale

Supposedly, the ones like that are designed to prevent buildup on the stone. The Dia-Sharps do get some, but they're easily cleaned with soap and water.
No word on mine, as yet, still in transit.

Just a note on shipping. I've found that if you can use eBay, even for Chinese purchases, the shipping times are much faster. China to NY in 2 or 3 days the 3 days to me.

Dale,

I have never worked a partial coverage stone.  Guessing I know now why Donnie does not have them.  I am not even sure I would know how to work a partial

Alright .. the 2000 & 3000 grit full coverage diamond stones are scheduled for delivery today .. YES !!!

Got 'em .. have used the 2000 grit on the woodstalker .. WONDERFUL !!!
